Staff/Sr. Staff Software Engineer, Product Engineering
About this role
Engineers in this position spend their time architecting and shipping user surfaces like web, mobile, and embedded integrations in tools such as Word and Slack, while simultaneously developing the underlying agentic capabilities and petabyte-scale retrieval systems that power them. Collaboration happens closely with artificial intelligence, legal, and go-to-market teams to construct secure software that delivers tangible value to professional services clients.
Harvey operates within the legal technology sector, combining frontier agentic AI with an enterprise-grade platform to transform complex knowledge work. Individuals joining the product engineering group will lead multi-team initiatives, define technical direction, and mentor senior peers while building scalable systems across a modern stack.
What you will do
- Design and deliver applications across web, desktop, mobile, and embedded environments including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Slack, and Google Docs.
- Drive large-scale engineering initiatives that span multiple product lines and shape the technical strategy for upcoming quarters.
- Develop AI-native features such as custom agent workflows, tool calling, memory management, and rigorous evaluation frameworks.
- Scale core backend systems to handle petabyte-scale document retrieval, rapid data ingestion growth, and multi-jurisdictional data collection.
- Write code across the full stack using React, TypeScript, Python, and Postgres to create robust APIs and intuitive user experiences.
- Guide technical execution and mentor senior and staff level engineers across the organization.
What you need
- Ten or more years of professional experience in product-focused software engineering operating at the staff level or higher.
- Demonstrated expertise across full stack development, backend systems, or artificial intelligence and agent workflows.
- Proven track record of delivering scalable and extensible systems that support growing software-as-a-service products.
- Hands-on programming proficiency with React, TypeScript, Python, and relational databases like Postgres.
- Practical experience building production-grade agentic systems involving agent loops, memory, and tool use.
- Strong foundation in computer science principles coupled with a history of cross-functional technical leadership.
