Staff Software Engineer, Agentic Commerce & Payments
About this role
The Replit Money team builds an agentic commerce platform that allows businesses to buy, manage, and discover products and services directly within the platform using natural language. Operating as a Staff Software Engineer, the incoming individual will design end-to-end purchasing workflows, establish the technical roadmap for agent-driven transactions, and expand payment capabilities built on top of existing Stripe integrations. This position exists to bridge consumer simplicity with enterprise purchasing controls, ensuring AI agents can safely interpret user intent, manage delegated authority, and confirm successful fulfillment.
Ideal candidates bring a strong background in distributed systems, third-party integrations, and Staff-level technical leadership across complex customer products. The person taking on this challenge will write code, mentor engineers, and collaborate closely with product and security partners to drive ambiguous initiatives from architecture through production operation.
What you will do
- Lead end-to-end purchasing experiences through Replit Agent by translating user intent into relevant options and obtaining appropriate authorization.
- Build extensible integrations with merchants, software vendors, and service providers to expand the commerce offering.
- Extend existing Stripe and payment capabilities to support new purchasing experiences without treating basic payment acceptance as a greenfield problem.
- Design agent-facing APIs and tools featuring clear contracts, secure credentials, and scoped permissions.
- Partner with product and security teams to support enterprise purchasing requirements including role-based access and auditable transaction histories.
- Own the purchase lifecycle past checkout such as provisioning, subscription state, receipts, renewals, and cancellations.
- Ensure agent-driven transactions run reliably using idempotency, verified events, and safe retries.
- Lead ambiguous cross-team initiatives, define incremental milestones, and remain hands-on with implementation.
What you need
- Demonstrate a track record of Staff-level technical leadership on complex customer-facing products or platforms.
- Possess strong hands-on engineering and system design skills including API design, data modeling, and distributed workflows.
- Bring experience building extensible third-party integrations while handling asynchronous events and partial failures.
- Exhibit strong product judgment to turn multi-step workflows into simple user experiences while balancing rapid delivery with correctness.
- Maintain a security-conscious approach to authentication, authorization, credentials, and sensitive data.
- Show a proven ability to align cross-functional partners on technical direction and drive execution independently.
- Have experience mentoring engineers and improving the quality of architecture and operations beyond personal projects.
- Feel comfortable using AI-assisted development tools while taking responsibility for code correctness and security.
