Role Overview

Ironclad seeks a Staff or Senior Staff Software Engineer for Agentic Search to own the architecture combining large language models and retrieval systems in San Francisco. The selected individual sets technical direction for the organization, influences search quality standards, and collaborates with product, applied science, and engineering leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Design and evolve agentic search architecture combining large language models and retrieval systems for complex customer queries.
Build and run evaluation-driven development workflows, including benchmarks, regression detection, and experiments measuring search quality.
Create content understanding and ingestion pipelines using natural language processing and large language model tools to process raw documents.
Establish architectural decisions and technical direction used by engineers across the artificial intelligence organization.

Requirements

Ten or more years of experience building production systems, with focus in search, information retrieval, content understanding, or recommendation systems.
Depth in learned or hybrid retrieval, query understanding or natural language understanding pipelines, or production large language model agent systems.
Production experience using search frameworks such as Elasticsearch, Solr, Vespa, or OpenSearch alongside relevance tuning and reranking.
Fluency using modern large language model application programming interfaces and multi-provider orchestration including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google.
Experience implementing evaluation-driven workflows encompassing offline benchmarks and structured comparisons.

Nice to Have

Practical experience with post-training algorithms and infrastructure like supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.
Background handling content understanding or information retrieval within structured-document-heavy domains.
Prior development involving retrieval-augmented generation systems utilizing varied document formats including PDFs, Word documents, and Google Docs.
