About this role

Turing is focused on accelerating superintelligence to drive economic progress by working with frontier AI labs. The company generates high-quality datasets, reinforcement learning environments, and research benchmarks designed to enhance model capabilities across software engineering, enterprise knowledge work, and advanced STEM reasoning. Turing bridges the gap between frontier research and real-world enterprise deployment by converting deployment signals into improved data and more capable models.

This Staff Research Scientist role is situated within the research organization, concentrating on developing novel methods to evaluate, train, and improve frontier AI systems. The work is research-first, targeting areas where established benchmarks or methodologies are currently missing. Scientists in this role will identify critical gaps in the existing literature, propose new research avenues, and drive projects from initial hypothesis through to experimentation, benchmark construction, and publication.

This position is ideal for a scientist who excels at recognizing important problems, formulating them precisely, and designing rigorous research programs to address them. Candidates who thrive in an environment where the research agenda is constantly evolving with the frontier of AI technology will find this opportunity suitable.

What you will do

  • Identify significant gaps within existing benchmark and evaluation literature.
  • Design new benchmarks across STEM fields and general model functionality.
  • Develop evaluations for emerging model capabilities that traditional benchmarks do not capture.
  • Design rigorous methodologies for task generation, grading, contamination control, and validation.
  • Build benchmarks that serve as both valuable research contributions and standards for frontier models.
  • Develop methods for generating high-quality synthetic STEM training data.
  • Study the impact of task selection and data quality on downstream performance.
  • Investigate mechanisms for model hallucination, uncertainty, and factual reliability.

What you need

  • A PhD or equivalent research experience in a technical field such as machine learning, computer science, mathematics, or physics is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute original research projects is essential.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of modern Large Language Models and the frontier AI research landscape.
  • Requires excellent experimental design skills, quantitative reasoning, and strong scientific judgment.
  • Must possess the ability to quickly grasp unfamiliar technical literature and develop expertise in new domains.
  • Strong proficiency in Python is necessary for independently building research prototypes and evaluation pipelines.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills are required for disseminating research findings.

Nice to have

  • Strong publication record

Benefits
