About this role

This is a full-time remote role based in Brazil or Colombia for a Senior Machine Learning and Data Engineer at Turing. This position focuses on data quality and sensitive data compliance, making it an ideal fit for an engineer with a strong background in machine learning and data validation who wants to build robust detection and sanitization systems.

Role Overview

Turing is hiring a Senior ML & Data Engineer specializing in Data Quality & Sensitive Data Compliance on a full-time remote basis in Brazil or Colombia. The professional in this position will own the data sanitization layer to ensure that information entering downstream systems contains no sensitive details and maintains high quality standards. This is a hands-on individual contributor role with a QA mindset, working closely with a senior machine learning lead without client-facing responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct deep dives into enterprise data to assess topic coherence, domain depth, completeness, and consistency across connectors.
Design and automate validation suites for data pipelines, including schema checks, completeness, drift detection, and reconciliation across raw, processed, and sanitized stages.
Surface and characterize quality issues to enable engineering and product action.
Design, train, and evaluate machine learning models, including Named Entity Recognition and other approaches, to detect sensitive entities across text and image documents.
Build replacement pipelines that substitute detected entities with coherent alternatives consistently across files.
Run algorithms over large volumes of data to prepare it for downstream agentic task building.
Build adversarial test sets for de-identification across sensitive data classes, covering edge cases, obfuscated identifiers, multilingual entities, OCR noise, and formats designed to bypass detectors.
Focus specifically on company identifiable information and financial data to prevent re-identification risks.
Measure and report de-identification performance by data class, tracking entity-level precision and recall, leak rates, false-negative audits, and replacement consistency.
Implement regression gates in CI/CD to prevent pipeline changes from shipping without passing data quality and sensitive-data checks.
Run sampling-based human-in-the-loop audits and maintain compliance audit trails.
Partner with engineering on root-cause analysis for inconsistencies or leaks and drive fixes to closure.

Requirements

Approximately 4 to 5 years of hands-on machine learning experience with ML as the primary background.
Strong Python skills for machine learning development and data validation utilizing tools such as pytest, Great Expectations, or Pandera.
Solid SQL skills and experience validating data across pipeline stages.
Familiarity with sensitive data categories and relevant standards, including HIPAA Safe Harbor, GDPR, LGPD, PCI DSS, and NDA obligations.
Experience building and testing Named Entity Recognition or other ML-based detection systems, building labeled eval sets, computing precision and recall, and handling non-determinism.
Understanding of re-identification risk regarding how innocuous details reveal organizations or individuals.
Comfort with ambiguity and a fast-moving environment.
A skeptical and detail-oriented approach to verification.

Nice to Have

Computer vision and OCR experience in building, scaling, and evaluating document pipelines for contracts, statements, invoices, presentations, and internal documents.
Hands-on experience with financial or healthcare data and their specific privacy requirements.
Startup experience.
Auditing large language model or vision-language model outputs.
Synthetic sensitive-data generation for PII, PHI, company, and financial records.
Familiarity with the Google Cloud Platform data stack, including BigQuery, Google Cloud Storage, and Cloud Run jobs, along with CI/CD integration.
Experience handling multi-tenant enterprise data with strict customer confidentiality requirements.
Compliance reporting or working with auditors.
