About this role
The Staff Platform Engineer role at Gravie is a remote technical leadership position focused on building infrastructure paths, defining architecture, and delivering AI capabilities. This position suits an experienced engineer with deep distributed systems and generative AI production expertise who wants to guide technical direction across multiple teams.\n\n## Role Overview\nGravie is hiring a remote Staff Platform Engineer to serve as the central hub for technical direction and standards. The position is structured around three primary areas: building paved paths and golden roads for engineering teams, defining target-state architecture, and designing production-grade AI capabilities. Engineers at Gravie own outcomes end to end and use agentic development workflows to execute multi-step engineering tasks while maintaining strict quality guardrails.\n\n## Key Responsibilities\n- Build paved paths, reference implementations, shared libraries, service templates, scaffolding, and pipeline templates.\n- Treat paved roads as products by measuring adoption and time to first success.\n- Implement solutions on real workloads with actual teams rather than demo repositories.\n- Construct distributed systems patterns including backend services, event-driven workers, job pipelines, APIs, and relational data models.\n- Partner with the Platform Engineering team to deliver infrastructure, manage migrations, and retire replaced services.\n- Participate in code reviews across teams and engage directly with production incidents.\n- Define and publish target-state architecture with clear ownership and decision dates.\n- Own AWS foundations, multi-account structures, network isolation, compute runtimes, managed data services, and cost governance.\n- Drive standards adoption through automated pipelines and measure compliance across repositories.\n- Evaluate and select models, frameworks, and vendors based on accuracy, latency, reliability, privacy, security, and cost.\n- Design and build production-grade AI agent systems, multi-agent workflows, and orchestration layers.\n- Construct retrieval, context, and memory systems that securely scope, redact, and audit sensitive data.\n- Develop AI-powered decision-support systems meeting accuracy, traceability, and explainability requirements in regulated environments.\n- Build product-quality user interfaces using React and TypeScript for AI capabilities.\n- Establish AI quality assurance patterns, automated evaluations, regression testing, groundedness checks, and compliance guardrails.\n- Collaborate with Product, Data, Security, and Infrastructure to align roadmaps, governance, and access control.\n\n## Requirements\n- Eight or more years of software engineering experience, including architecture scope, organization-wide remit, and complex system ownership.\n- Active coding capability with the ability to review code and open meaningful merge requests in unfamiliar codebases.\n- Demonstrated experience building internal platform capabilities and paved paths that other teams voluntarily adopted.\n- Hands-on production experience building and operating AI applications, including handling evaluation, monitoring, failure, guardrails, latency, and cost.\n- Deep AWS expertise covering multi-account organizations, identity boundaries, networking, serverless runtimes, managed data services, and cost governance.\n- Experience writing infrastructure as code using Terraform, CDK, or both.\n- Track record of establishing architectural foundations and introducing standards.\n\n## Skills and Tools\n- AWS\n- Terraform\n- CDK\n- React\n- TypeScript\n- Generative AI and AI Agents\n- Distributed Systems\n- Event-Driven Architecture\n\n## Salary and Benefits\n- Salary range of $193,875 to $258,500\n- Equity offerings included\n\n## About the Company\nGravie creates health benefits designed for small and midsize businesses and their employees.
