About this role

The Staff AI Test Automation Engineer position at Gravie is a remote full-time role focused on building and scaling intelligent, AI-driven testing frameworks. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced test automation expert who wants to shape modern software quality systems for health benefit solutions.

Role Overview

As a Staff AI Test Automation Engineer, you will take full ownership of cutting-edge AI-driven test automation systems across product portals. Rather than manually authoring test cases, your primary focus is building the systems, feedback loops, and infrastructure that allow AI agents to generate, execute, and maintain automated tests at scale. You will collaborate closely with QA, Engineering, and Product teams to boost regression coverage, speed up delivery, and minimize production defects. Working extensively with Agentic AI, you will manage workflows where AI agents autonomously create, run, and iterate on tests with minimal human intervention.

Key Responsibilities

Build and refine AI-driven test automation workflows using tools like Claude Code to enable AI agents to autonomously generate, execute, and iterate on Playwright tests.
Evolve the existing Playwright framework by optimizing patterns, fixtures, page-object models, and conventions for AI-assisted test generation.
Establish robust feedback loops linking local test runs, CI pipeline outcomes, and merge request creation so AI tools can interpret failures, fix issues, and resubmit tests independently.
Finalize the ongoing migration from Geb and Spock to Playwright by utilizing AI agents to speed up conversion while preserving continuous coverage.
Integrate and optimize Playwright test execution inside GitLab CI/CD pipelines with automated quality gates, parallelization, and caching strategies.
Monitor test performance metrics like pass or fail trends, flakiness rates, and coverage gaps to direct AI-driven test generation toward high-value uncovered features.
Develop API-layer automation and contract tests for microservice boundaries when end-to-end user interface tests are not appropriate.
Implement hands-on automation for claims processing systems, contract testing, system integrations, and end-to-end user journeys.
Continuously fine-tune the AI automation system by refining prompts, validation patterns, and context structures to maximize first-pass test generation accuracy.

Requirements

Ten or more years of professional experience in test automation engineering, software development engineering in test, or software engineering with rigorous testing methodologies.
Practical, hands-on background using Agentic AI solutions such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot to build and maintain code at scale.
Demonstrated experience working with Playwright or an equivalent modern end-to-end testing framework.
Proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript capable of producing production-grade code.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, specifically GitLab, including writing pipeline configurations, test stages, and merge request workflows.
Strong understanding of REST API testing and how to select between UI-level and API-level test strategies.
Practical experience developing test automation for claims platforms, system integrations, contract testing, and complete user journeys.
Proven history of migrating legacy testing frameworks to modern solutions while preserving test coverage.
Exceptional communication abilities to explain technical concepts to non-technical partners and produce clear documentation.
A systems-oriented builder mindset focused on automation leverage, feedback loops, and infrastructure rather than single test cases.
Comfort working in ambiguous and evolving environments to help define best practices for AI-driven testing.

Nice to Have

Background working with Groovy, Spock, or Geb.
Prior experience implementing contract testing with tools like Pact.
Industry background within health insurance, benefits administration, or regulated sectors.
Experience contributing to internal developer productivity platforms or internal tooling.
