Coinbase seeks a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to direct the technical strategy for identity verification, ensuring that every user, document, and capture session undergoes rigorous authentication.
Ownership of the end-to-end machine learning stack spans document authenticity models, liveness detection, and large-scale graph neural networks that uncover coordinated fraud rings. Collaboration happens alongside the Risk and ML Platform pods to align cross-company system design while mentoring senior and mid-level engineers. Success in this capacity demands deep domain expertise in biometrics or account integrity paired with a track record of driving production machine learning architectures at scale.
What you will do
- Manage the complete identity verification machine learning stack from feature pipelines to real-time production enforcement.
- Construct identity-graph systems utilizing graph neural networks to isolate synthetic-identity rings and complex fraud patterns.
- Implement behavioral and device-intelligence models for anomaly detection and bot-versus-human classification.
- Formulate vendor strategy by benchmarking external models against proprietary evaluation sets and creating dynamic routing logic.
- Guide technical architecture and mentor senior and mid-level engineers within the identity verification pod.
What you need
- Bring over eight years of experience deploying production machine learning systems at scale with demonstrated technical leadership.
- Possess domain expertise in biometrics, identity verification, or account integrity.
- Demonstrate applied machine learning background in at least two areas including computer vision, graph neural networks, sequence models, or natural language processing.
- Write expert-level Python code with production experience using TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Translate know-your-customer regulations and fraud trends into actionable machine learning roadmaps for diverse stakeholders.
