Role Overview
The Staff Electrical Engineer - Low Voltage position at Lambda involves managing electrical design standards for high-density AI infrastructure within the Data Center Business department. This full-time role is based in San Francisco, requiring a hybrid schedule with an office presence four days per week and Tuesday designated as a work-from-home day, making it an ideal fit for engineers experienced in mission-critical facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of electrical design standards and reference architectures for low-voltage systems powering high-density artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Lead the complete design process starting from the transformer secondary through switchgear, uninterruptible power supply systems, distribution equipment, busway, and rack-level power delivery.
Build architectures for 480V and 415V alternating current systems that serve graphics processing unit clusters and auxiliary infrastructure.
Formulate specifications for low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, UPS systems, static transfer switches, power distribution units, remote power panels, busway, rack power distribution units, grounding, metering, and monitoring.
Model equipment loads, graphics processing unit power behavior, transient demand, harmonics, redundancy, capacity, and electrical failure domains.
Create and review single-line diagrams, panel schedules, equipment specifications, sequences of operation, and basis-of-design documentation.
Assess greenfield, retrofit, and partner-created designs for reliability, efficiency, maintainability, constructability, cost, and scheduling.
Conduct or oversee load-flow, short-circuit, selective-coordination, arc-flash, voltage-drop, and power-quality studies.
Synchronize electrical requirements across data center facilities, mechanical systems, high-performance computing architecture, hardware engineering, construction, and operations.
Assist with equipment selection, factory testing, construction sequencing, commissioning, integrated systems testing, and root-cause investigations while traveling to project sites, manufacturers, and partner locations as necessary.
Requirements
Professional background in designing low-voltage electrical systems for data centers, mission-critical facilities, or large industrial environments.
Familiarity with low-voltage distribution, UPS topologies, switchgear, busway, grounding, rack-level distribution, and electrical monitoring.
Knowledge of redundancy models including N, N+1, 2N, distributed redundant, and catcher architectures.
Capability to draft and review single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, coordination studies, and commissioning documentation.
Proficiency in using ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or comparable electrical analysis software.
Understanding of applicable electrical and safety rules, such as NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and NETA standards.
Ability to translate information technology equipment requirements into safe, scalable, and maintainable facility designs.
Strong communication skills across engineering, construction, operations, vendors, and executive stakeholders.
Holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to Have
Background working with hyperscale, colocation, high-performance computing, or artificial intelligence data centers.
Experience delivering power to high-density graphics processing unit racks or liquid-cooled computing infrastructure.
Familiarity with dynamic loads, power transients, harmonics, rack-level monitoring, or power-capacity optimization.
Practice supporting factory acceptance testing, commissioning, integrated systems testing, or failure investigations.
Exposure to low-voltage 400V and 800V DC converters, distribution, and protection devices.
Familiarity with PSCAD, alternative electromagnetic transient simulation tools, or system stability analysis.
Professional Engineer licensure or active progress toward licensure.
