The Staff AI Software Engineer, Product position at Brightwheel is a remote, full-time engineering opportunity designed for an AI-native builder looking to transform early childhood education technology across the United States. This role suits an experienced software professional who wants to shape product experiences by integrating advanced artificial intelligence into daily workflows for educators, families, and administrators.
Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of substantial engineering problems, guiding them from initial discovery all the way through launch, measurement, and continuous iteration.
Leverage artificial intelligence both to accelerate personal engineering velocity and to enhance customer-facing product offerings.
Build robust customer workflows across vital operational areas such as billing, enrollment, classroom management, staffing, and family communications.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners in product, design, and customer-facing teams to resolve ambiguous challenges and deliver impactful software.
Create rapid prototypes, validate core assumptions using working software, define key success metrics, and iterate directly in production environments.
Maintain and elevate standards for security, privacy, quality, reliability, execution, and system observability.
Requirements
Bring at least 5 years of professional software engineering experience to the role.
Demonstrate strong engineering fundamentals with the ability to reason effectively across systems, data structures, APIs, and product infrastructure.
Show a proven track record of owning production projects from initial definition to launch and ongoing iteration.
Actively integrate AI tools and agents into daily engineering workflows to drive efficiency.
Demonstrate an ability to increase output velocity without ever compromising on quality standards.
Possess practical examples of automating tasks for personal use, team operations, or broader company workflows.
Excel in ambiguous environments, turning unclear problem statements into shipped software solutions.
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across multiple departments while prioritizing privacy and customer trust.
Nice to Have
Prior experience successfully shipping AI-powered products, internal tools, or automated workflows to production.
Familiarity with retrieval systems, tool use, monitoring, evaluation, orchestration, and agentic workflows.
Background working in vertical SaaS, education, fintech, healthcare, CRM, ecommerce, or other operations-intensive domains.
A robust portfolio showcasing personal projects, side projects, open-source contributions, writing, or demos that highlight a strong builder mentality.
Experience designing customer-facing product experiences that achieved measurable adoption and outcome impact.
Background in improving web or mobile application outcomes through thoughtful architecture, shared patterns, or tooling.
Skills and Tools
Backend technologies including Ruby on Rails and Sidekiq.
Data infrastructure utilizing PostgreSQL on Amazon RDS, Redis, and event analytics pipelines.
Frontend development with React and TypeScript.
Mobile engineering using Swift for iOS and Kotlin with Jetpack Compose for Android.
Cloud and infrastructure management leveraging Docker, Kubernetes on Amazon EKS, GitHub Actions, FluxCD, and AWS services like S3, CloudFront, CloudWatch, and SNS.
AI and automation tools including AWS Bedrock, hosted large language models, vector search, agent frameworks, and coding assistants like Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex.
Salary and Benefits
Annual salary range between $154,000 and $237,000 in USD.
