Role Overview

Brightwheel seeks a Senior Engineering Manager to oversee a full-stack engineering group focused on building customer-facing products for school leaders, teachers, and families. The position requires setting technical strategies for quality, security, and AI-powered workflows to enhance operational health across web, mobile, and backend systems.

Key Responsibilities

Direct a full-stack engineering team through the entire lifecycle from problem definition to production, measurement, and iteration.
Convert high-level company goals into distinct outcomes, investment choices, and reliable execution plans.
Establish technical strategies for reliability, privacy, security, and operational health.
Deliver AI-powered products and transform how the development group integrates artificial intelligence into everyday operations.
Hire, mentor, and evaluate software engineers while maintaining high performance standards.
Manage capacity, dependencies, forecasts, and project risks transparently.
Collaborate with Product and Design teams to drive measurable product adoption and customer impact.
Monitor product and platform health across backend, web, and mobile environments.
Utilize production data, operational signals, and customer behavior insights to determine development priorities.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience leading an engineering team that successfully delivered measurable business or customer results.
Technical depth sufficient to challenge architecture, data, and reliability decisions constructively.
Proven track record of setting engineering strategies and making deliberate prioritization choices.
Experience shipping an artificial intelligence-powered product or workflow to a production environment.
Background in hiring, mentoring, and managing talent, including direct handling of performance matters.
Experience establishing collaborative partnerships with Product, Design, and business units while advocating for engineering standards.

Nice to Have

Background working in vertical SaaS, education, healthcare, fintech, ecommerce, CRM, or similar operations-heavy industries.
Experience leading significant shifts in product direction, operating models, or architecture.
Practical knowledge of building production artificial intelligence products, automation, agents, or evaluation systems.
Prior success building customer-facing applications with measurable outcome impact.
Familiarity utilizing production data and user feedback to refine backend, web, or mobile applications.
