About this role

The Sr. Vehicle Modeling Engineer position at Rivian & Volkswagen Group Technologies in Irvine, California, involves developing next-generation AI-assisted and model-driven systems engineering. This full-time role suits an innovative engineer experienced in physical systems modeling, artificial intelligence tooling, and modern software development.

Role Overview

The Systems Design Reliability Engineering team focuses on replacing traditional requirements processes with simulation-first design and Digital Twin-based verification. As a senior engineer, you will own features end-to-end, ranging from constructing plant models and co-simulation environments to deploying large language model-assisted requirement and test pipelines. You will also participate directly in systems engineering tasks such as writing requirements, conducting analysis, and managing design reviews across vehicle controls, infotainment, communications, and access domains.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain multi-fidelity plant models packaged as Functional Mock-up Units for diverse vehicle subsystems including powertrain, dynamics, thermal, and body components.
Develop and execute co-simulation environments pairing virtual Electronic Control Units with plant models for model-to-code design, software-in-the-loop regression testing, and field issue replication.
Construct language model pipelines dedicated to requirement drafting, test script creation, coverage gap assessment, and root cause analysis.
Implement semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation applications over architectural models, test scripts, and technical requirements.
Integrate artificial intelligence assistants into GitLab workflows and test management software using APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and plugins.
Author technical requirements and test cases while taking part in architecture, interface, and safety design reviews.

Requirements

Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical project experience.
Demonstrated proficiency in Python for data processing, workflow prototyping, automation scripts, or microservices.
Practical background in building large language model applications encompassing retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, semantic search, structured reasoning, or agent frameworks.
Systems-minded perspective capable of breaking down complex physical products into interacting subsystems, behaviors, and interfaces.
Ability to iterate rapidly from initial prototypes to production-ready modeling solutions within a dynamic environment.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with physical simulation platforms such as OpenModelica, Simulink, Julia, or Functional Mock-up Interface standards.
Hands-on involvement with physical systems including vehicle dynamics, robotics, solar cars, or Formula SAE projects.
Exposure to automotive systems engineering artifacts like requirement specifications, electronic architectures, and Controller Area Network signals.
Experience evaluating large language models regarding precision, recall, hallucination rates, latency, and operational cost.
Prior background with GitLab CI/CD, fault tree analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, or Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis.
