About this role

Role Overview

This full-time Sr. Electronics Design and Characterization Engineer (Zonal BMS) position is based in Irvine, California, with remote flexibility available for qualified candidates. The role suits an experienced electrical engineering professional ready to drive design reviews and hardware characterization for advanced vehicle electronics.

Key Responsibilities

Create comprehensive design verification and characterization test plans for electronic control unit programs alongside reliability, design, and firmware teams.
Conduct bench-level characterization at the integrated circuit and printed circuit board assembly levels, assessing high-side and low-side driver behaviors, voltage limits, and thermal derating.
Test protection and diagnostic mechanisms across various fault scenarios like open loads, shorts, over-current, and reverse polarity.
Lead electronic fuse testing initiatives for Zonal electronic control units, evaluating $I^2T$ characterization and thermal repeatability.
Deliver early feedback to design engineers regarding design decisions, testability, and Design for Testability reports.
Build automation scripts and instrumentation drivers utilizing Python and AI coding agents to optimize characterization testing speed.
Utilize AI tooling to analyze massive characterization datasets, identifying parametric drift and performance outliers.
Partner with software teams to flash, test, and troubleshoot firmware, while leading cross-functional root-cause investigations for non-compliance test results.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or equivalent work experience in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in electronics design, characterization, and validation testing.
Demonstrated proficiency using lab tools such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, digital multimeters, source measure units, and current probes.
Solid understanding of fundamental electrical engineering principles and advanced circuit analysis.
Proven background in scripting and data analysis using Python.
Practical utilization of AI tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Cursor to write test code and analyze characterization data with human verification.

Nice to Have

Hands-on characterization background involving zonal controllers, power distribution, e-fuse modules, or motor drivers.
Familiarity with low-level firmware and C programming language.
Experience working with Altium Designer and electronics simulation applications like LTspice or PSpice.
Working knowledge of vehicle electrical architectures, communication buses including Ethernet, CAN, LIN, and diagnostic protocols like UDS.
Experience designing custom printed circuit board assemblies, load emulation boards, or high-current test fixtures.
Understanding of automotive power standards, transient immunity, and ISO 26262 functional safety concepts.
