About this role

Role Overview

The Software Engineer, Edge AI role is a full-time, hands-on individual contributor position based in Palo Alto, California, with remote flexibility. This opportunity suits an engineer early in their career who wants to tackle real systems challenges involving vehicle data and on-device machine learning.

Key Responsibilities

Design and build native services in C++ and Rust that operate on vehicle compute across Linux, Android, and QNX targets.
Work on the telemetry platform by managing signal collection, derived metrics on the vehicle, diagnostics, and fleet configuration tooling.
Improve the data upload path for vehicles to maximize throughput and reliability over Wi-Fi and cellular networks while optimizing fleet-scale costs.
Deploy and optimize machine learning models on vehicle NPUs, including speech recognition, text-to-speech, and wake-word detection.
Instrument software for field debugging, then analyze runtime data to resolve issues on physical vehicles.
Benchmark, soak test, and defend strict performance budgets to catch regressions prior to deployment.
Write thorough design documents, conduct code reviews, and debug software on bench hardware and inside vehicles.

Requirements

Possess 2-4 years of software engineering experience, or hold a BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with equivalent demonstrated building experience.
Provide demonstrated evidence of building complex systems through hackathons, robotics competitions, university tech clubs, substantial internships, open-source contributions, or previous production work.
Strong Linux and systems fundamentals encompassing processes, threading, concurrency, memory, inter-process communication, and filesystems.
Proficiency in using debugging tools like gdb, perf, and strace on a running system.
Proficiency in programming with either C++ or Rust.
Ability to perform methodical debugging on large, interconnected systems.
Clear written communication skills demonstrated through design docs, tickets, and code reviews.

Nice to Have

Experience with inference runtimes such as ONNX Runtime, TensorRT, TFLite, llama.cpp, ExecuTorch, or silicon vendor SDKs.
Background with audio or speech models including speech recognition, text to speech, wake-word detection, voice activity detection, or audio signal processing.
Android development experience with a focus on AOSP, the audio stack, HALs, Binder, or JNI.
Background in embedded, automotive, robotics, or other resource-constrained real-time systems.
Networking and large-scale data transfer experience involving throughput tuning, gRPC or similar IPC frameworks, and observability tooling.
Contributions to open-source systems or machine learning infrastructure projects.
