About this role

Hims-and-hers is seeking a Sr. Director of Machine Learning for a US Remote position to lead the teams building core AI services for its health and wellness platform. This leadership opportunity suits an experienced machine learning and software engineering professional who can drive applied AI strategy, productionize deep learning and LLM-powered services, and collaborate closely with clinical and engineering teams.

Role Overview

Hims-and-hers is hiring a Sr. Director of Machine Learning to direct the application of foundation models and custom deep learning solutions across the platform. The role focuses on owning applied AI initiatives, such as LLM-powered clinical intake systems, provider support tools, personalization engines, and operational workflows, while managing and expanding a dedicated team of applied scientists and machine learning engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and grow applied scientists, ML engineers, and ML production engineers through end-to-end AI service development.
Define strategy for frontier LLM implementation including prompt design, retrieval, agentic workflows, structured output reliability, cost management, and latency control.
Direct the design of orchestration, validation, and guardrails to ensure probabilistic components deliver dependable outputs for clinical and product workflows.
Supervise the creation of in-house classical machine learning and deep learning models for recommendations and provider-facing treatment plans.
Establish production standards for AI services, encompassing SLOs for accuracy and latency, rollout plans, and failure management.
Make build-versus-fine-tune-versus-prompt decisions and adapt as model capabilities evolve.
Partner with Clinical and Medical Affairs to guarantee human-in-the-loop design and oversight for clinical-facing models.
Collaborate with ML infrastructure teams to define evaluation criteria, annotation needs, and metrics tracking.
Work alongside Product, Data Science, Engineering, Security, Legal, and Compliance to translate ambiguous problems into structured ML initiatives.
Establish scientific and engineering standards for experiment design, code quality, reproducibility, model documentation, and responsible AI.
Shape team hiring, leveling, mentorship, and development for senior individual contributors and managers.
Act as a senior technical voice within the AI organization to guide multi-year roadmaps and investment strategies.

Requirements

14+ years of professional experience in software engineering and machine learning.
8+ years of experience leading machine learning teams, including management of senior tech leads or managers.
Demonstrated track record of shipping production-scale machine learning products and maintaining them operationally.
Deep understanding of modern LLM application development, encompassing RAG, evaluation, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, adaptation, and agent architectures.
Practical experience training and deploying deep learning models such as sequence, ranking, classification, or recommendation models.
Strong software architecture judgment regarding data flow, service boundaries, operational costs, and failure modes.
Ability to balance model quality against latency, operational complexity, and cost while communicating tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.
Comfortable operating with high ambiguity to turn vague problems into functional systems with measurable impact.
Excellent communication skills to influence peers, clinical stakeholders, and executives.

Nice to Have

Experience in healthcare, digital health, regulated domains, or safety-critical machine learning systems.
Experience with clinical decision support, clinical NLP, or machine learning systems with human experts as end users.
