The Sr. Director of Commercial and Legal Affairs at Backblaze directs the commercial, privacy, and product legal functions for the organization on a fully remote basis within the United States. This position suits an experienced commercial attorney who wants to act as a strategic business partner while managing a dedicated team of legal professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the commercial contracting function by acting as the primary legal owner for high-value and strategic transactions.
Draft, review, and negotiate complex technology agreements, including enterprise SaaS contracts, master services agreements, SOWs, reseller frameworks, and partnership deals.
Provide practical advice on global privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA, and oversee the maintenance of data protection frameworks.
Partner with Security, Compliance, and Product departments to integrate privacy obligations into new software features and operational workflows.
Counsel engineering and product groups on data use, intellectual property, open source considerations, and AI-driven workloads.
Build and refine commercial playbooks, contracting processes, and negotiation frameworks to support rapid global scaling.
Lead, mentor, and develop attorneys and legal professionals supporting commercial, privacy, and product work.

Requirements

Hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and maintain an active U.S. bar membership in good standing.
Bring 10 or more years of relevant legal experience, featuring substantial work negotiating complex technology transactions and enterprise SaaS agreements.
Possess meaningful in-house legal experience, ideally within a high-growth SaaS or technology organization.
Demonstrate a solid working knowledge of global privacy and data protection legislation.
Show prior experience providing practical legal guidance directly to engineering and product teams.
Exhibit background in managing, mentoring, or developing other legal team members.
