Role Overview
The Senior Data Scientist at impact.com in Vancouver, British Columbia, designs and deploys machine learning models that optimize pricing, yield, and inventory allocation within the programmatic marketplace. This role suits an independent technical professional with strong production machine learning skills and marketplace economic insight who wants to own end-to-end model development.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and deploy machine learning models that manage auction pricing, bid shading, floor prices, and yield optimization across programmatic inventory.
Own inventory allocation logic, routing, pacing, and supply-to-demand matching across various deal types and partner segments.
Architect robust data pipelines, feature stores, event streams, and real-time feature serving infrastructure to feed programmatic models.
Deploy models to production environments while handling latency, throughput, and system reliability requirements during high-volume auction traffic.
Design and execute rigorous A/B and holdout experiments to measure the causal impact of model updates on publisher revenue and advertiser performance.
Research and implement self-learning components, contextual bandits, and reinforcement learning signals within the programmatic architecture.
Collaborate closely with product, data science, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable modeling solutions.
Requirements
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in data science, quantitative research, or machine learning engineering.
At least 2 years of direct experience building and deploying machine learning models within programmatic advertising, ad tech, marketplace optimization, real-time bidding, or dynamic pricing domains.
Solid understanding of programmatic auction mechanics such as header bidding, RTB, deal types, and floor pricing.
Demonstrated ability to take models from initial prototype to production independently, covering real-time inference, drift monitoring, and retraining pipelines.
Strong expertise in data architecture, creating feature stores, and building pipelines for high-volume, low-latency machine learning systems.
Proficiency in Python and SQL, alongside familiarity with machine learning libraries like PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, XGBoost, and LightGBM.
Experience with large-scale data tools such as Spark, Kafka, streaming frameworks, or batch processing systems.
Strong background in causal inference and experiment design within online, delayed-feedback environments.
Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or Economics.
Nice to Have
Direct experience with supply-side platform (SSP), demand-side platform (DSP), or exchange-side yield optimization and bid landscape modeling.
Familiarity with auction theory concepts including second-price versus first-price dynamics and optimal reserve pricing.
Practical knowledge of contextual bandits, multi-armed bandits, or reinforcement learning for real-time decision-making systems.
Experience with online learning, adaptive algorithms, and privacy-preserving machine learning techniques like differential privacy.
Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform tools including BigQuery, Vertex AI, Dataflow, and Pub/Sub.
Prior background working with supply forecasting, capacity planning, or affiliate and partnership ecosystems.
