About this role

The QA Chapter Lead role at impact.com in Cape Town offers an exciting opportunity to set the quality bar across both IO and AI engineering groups. This position suits an experienced quality professional with a background in test automation who excels at coaching engineers to own end-to-end testing rather than managing a traditional QA queue.

Role Overview

impact.com is seeking a QA Chapter Lead to shape how engineering teams design, build, and ship software. Operating in Cape Town, this leadership position is built entirely on influence. Rather than acting as a downstream gatekeeper, the lead establishes tooling, evaluation systems, and standards that make quality the natural path for every team. The scope covers two unique delivery contexts: deterministic platform software like APIs and ETL pipelines, and non-deterministic agentic AI products where safety, cost, latency, and correctness matter.

Key Responsibilities

Define the quality operating model and metrics—such as escaped defects and confidence to ship—across both platform and AI groups.
Build and lead a cross-group quality engineering chapter, coaching engineers to own testing for their own code.
Treat AI agents as first-class contributors to testing, generating coverage and test data while utilizing human-designed guardrails.
Build evaluation systems for non-deterministic AI products, including regression suites for prompt and behavior testing, safety, and hallucination checks.
Establish comprehensive test strategies for the IO platform, encompassing functional, integration, regression, performance, and security testing.
Partner closely with Engineering Leads and Product Managers to move quality upstream into the design and scoping phases.

Requirements

5+ years of professional experience in Quality Assurance or with a Software Development Engineering in Test (SDET) background.
Proven track record of upholding high software quality standards for entire groups through leadership by influence.
Practical familiarity with agentic AI ecosystems, including MCPs, Agents, Agent Skills, and testing harnesses for non-deterministic or LLM-based products.
Strong understanding of cloud ecosystems, Docker containerization, ETL pipelines, and API endpoints.
Deep expertise in testing tools, frameworks, and methodologies like Playwright, Selenium, TestRail, and CI/CD integrations.
Excellent communication skills to align cross-functional teams around a shared quality vision.

Nice to Have

Experience leading test framework or tooling migrations.
Familiarity with OWASP guidelines and security testing tools.
Interest in SRE principles and treating reliability as a core quality concern.
Experience embedding quality practices into teams previously lacking them or transitioning away from a dedicated-QA model.
