About this role

The Sr. Data Scientist, Programmatic Algorithms role at impact.com is based in Seattle, WA, and is suited for an experienced professional with a strong background in machine learning engineering, programmatic advertising, and marketplace optimization. This position operates within the Programmatic Experience Group to design and deploy machine learning models that scale pricing, yield, and inventory allocation.

Role Overview

impact.com is seeking an embedded Senior Data Scientist to own the end-to-end design and deployment of machine learning models that optimize marketplace economics, pricing, and inventory. Operating as an individual contributor, the person in this role bridges data science, platform engineering, and marketplace mechanics. Responsibilities include building data pipelines, engineering features, and deploying real-time inference systems to balance advertiser performance with publisher monetization.

Key Responsibilities

Design and deploy machine learning models that optimize auction pricing, bid shading, floor price setting, and yield across programmatic inventory.
Own inventory allocation logic, including routing, pacing, and matching supply to demand across various deal types and partner segments.
Build data infrastructure and pipelines, feature stores, and real-time feature serving tools capable of handling high-volume auction data.
Deploy models to production real-time inference environments, taking ownership of latency, reliability, throughput, and system health.
Execute rigorous A/B and holdout experiments to measure the causal impact of model changes on yield, fill rate, and partner revenue.
Implement adaptive, self-learning components like contextual bandits and reinforcement learning signals to reduce reliance on manual rules.
Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and data science teams to translate business requirements into technical modeling approaches.

Requirements

5+ years of total experience in data science, machine learning engineering, or quantitative research.
At least 2+ years of specialized experience building and deploying machine learning models in programmatic advertising, ad tech, marketplace optimization, real-time bidding, or dynamic pricing.
Demonstrated understanding of programmatic auction mechanics such as RTB, header bidding, floor pricing, and bid shading.
Proven ability to take models from prototype to production independently, covering real-time inference, monitoring, and retraining pipelines.
Experience designing data infrastructure, pipelines, feature stores, and training frameworks for high-volume, low-latency systems.
Strong grasp of causal inference and experiment design in online, delayed-feedback environments.
Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or Economics.

Nice to Have

Direct experience with SSP, DSP, or exchange-side yield optimization, floor price optimization, or deal matching algorithms.
Familiarity with auction theory, first-price versus second-price dynamics, and optimal reserve pricing.
Experience with contextual bandits, multi-armed bandits, or reinforcement learning applied to real-time decisioning problems.
Knowledge of online learning, adaptive algorithms, and privacy-preserving machine learning techniques.
Experience with GCP tools like BigQuery, Vertex AI, Dataflow, and Pub/Sub, or Databricks and Spark.

Skills and Tools

Python and SQL
Machine learning libraries including scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, PyTorch, and TensorFlow
Large-scale data tools such as Spark and Kafka
Real-time feature serving and low-latency model deployment via REST APIs, gRPC, or streaming inference
MLOps workflows covering model versioning, drift monitoring, evaluation, and retraining

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $165,000 to $185,000 per year.
Additional 5% variable annual bonus contingent on company performance.
Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) grant with a 3-year vesting schedule.
Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance alongside flexible spending accounts and a 401(k).
Responsible PTO policy supporting a flexible work-life balance.
Mental health and wellness benefits including up to 12 fully covered therapy or coaching sessions per year and a monthly gym reimbursement.
