About this role

Engineers who thrive in fast-paced, high-stakes environments will find a natural home within the Environmental Health and Safety team at SpaceX. The group focuses on establishing rigorous human and system safety controls as the organization expands its large-scale AI infrastructure and supercomputing facilities in Memphis.

Daily responsibilities center on overseeing electrical safety programs, conducting risk assessments on power and cooling systems, and performing structured evaluations like FMEA and HAZOP studies. The position exists to ensure high-density critical infrastructure meets strict reliability requirements, allowing compute capacity to scale rapidly without compromising safety.

Candidates need a strong foundation in electrical system architecture, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy storage system design. Success in the role requires bridging hands-on engineering principles with proactive safety management to protect personnel and equipment during aggressive deployment timelines.

What you will do

  • Manage electrical safety programs covering arc-flash analysis, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices for generators, switchgear, UPS, and PDUs.
  • Perform regular risk assessments and structured evaluations such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and HAZOP studies for critical systems.
  • Validate generator and automatic transfer switch failover procedures from a safety perspective to maintain operational continuity.
  • Monitor and mitigate hazards related to cooling failures, hot spots, thermal runaway, and extreme environmental conditions.
  • Establish safe operating limits and emergency response procedures for chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, liquid cooling systems, and energy storage.
  • Develop, maintain, and conduct regular drills for emergency response plans dealing with power loss, fire, water events, and cooling failures.
  • Ensure full compliance with relevant standards and codes including NFPA, OSHA, IEC, ISO 45001, and local building regulations.

What you need

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial or systems engineering, chemical engineering, fire protection engineering, or a related field.
  • Bring at least five years of professional experience in electrical power systems, critical-facility operations, manufacturing, quality, or design engineering.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of electrical system architecture, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy storage system architecture.
  • Meet U.S. Government export regulations through citizenship, lawful permanent residency, refugee, or asylee status as required by ITAR guidelines.
  • Relocate to the Memphis, Tennessee area, as this is an on-site position requiring regular physical presence.

Nice to have

  • Experience with programming PLCs, IoT device administration, and scripting for automation or data analysis.
  • Proficiency with PFMEA, root cause analysis, statistical process control, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Experience using CAE or CFD tools such as Ansys in mission-critical environments.
  • Professional certifications including CSP, PE, CEM, NFPA-related credentials, or data-center-specific qualifications.
  • Hands-on background in data centers or other mission-critical facilities.
