Role Overview

SpaceX is hiring a full-time Software Engineer for the AI Data Engineering team in Hawthorne, CA. The position focuses on developing AI-powered tools, automation, data pipelines, and agentic systems to solve real engineering challenges across launch vehicles and spacecraft. Team members collaborate directly with professionals in avionics, propulsion, and structures to streamline mission preparation and anomaly investigations.

Key Responsibilities

Partner directly with engineering teams to identify repetitive or error-prone tasks and build automation tools.
Process large volumes of engineering data, including telemetry, hardware design databases, and test records, to automate reviews and flag anomalies.
Design agentic AI systems, multi-agent workflows, and MCP servers for querying and analyzing internal systems.
Integrate developed tools into CI/CD pipelines, mission workflows, and review processes.
Build internal web dashboards displaying mission status, open work, and data review results.
Prototype rapidly, validate AI outputs against known-good results, and maintain production-grade tools.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, engineering, math, or physics, or 4+ years of professional automation engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
1+ years of software engineering experience focusing on automation tools and/or AI integrations.
1+ years of programming experience in Python.
Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Must meet U.S. government export regulation requirements under ITAR.

Nice to Have

Experience building tools with demonstrated user adoption and direct feedback incorporation.
Comfort analyzing large engineering or scientific datasets using pandas and NumPy.
Experience building code or configuration generators from a source of truth.
Background building agentic AI systems, MCP servers, and LLM evaluations.
Integration experience with REST APIs and working knowledge of SQL, PostgreSQL, vector, and non-relational databases.
Full-stack web development experience using React, TypeScript, FastAPI, or Flask.
Development proficiency on Linux, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
Familiarity with hardware engineering concepts or previous background as a hardware or test engineer.

Salary and Benefits

Base salary range of $125,000.00 to $160,000.00 for Level 1 (and up to $195,000.00 for Level 2 based on experience).
