About this role

The Sr. Software Engineer (AI Data Engineering) role at SpaceX in Hawthorne, CA, involves building AI-powered tools and automation to solve engineering problems for launch vehicles and spacecraft, making it ideal for software engineers experienced in automation and AI integrations. The position centers on eliminating repetitive engineering tasks through advanced data pipelines, agentic workflows, and web applications.

Role Overview

The Sr. Software Engineer (AI Data Engineering) position operates within the Artificial Intelligence Data Engineering Software team. This professional creates automation and artificial intelligence solutions that process large telemetry datasets, review test records, and prepare teams for missions. The role suits engineers who want to build production-grade internal tools that directly impact space exploration and launch vehicle reuse.

Key Responsibilities

Partner directly with engineering teams to identify repetitive or error-prone workflows and design automated solutions
Process large volumes of engineering data, including telemetry, hardware design databases, and test records, to flag anomalies and surface insights
Design agentic AI systems, multi-agent workflows, and MCP servers that enable teams to query and analyze internal systems
Integrate software tools into CI/CD pipelines, mission workflows, and review processes
Build internal web dashboards displaying mission status, open work, and data review results
Rapidly prototype, test, and validate all tools against known-good results for a flight-critical environment
Prioritize development tasks based on return on investment and track engineering hours saved

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, engineering, math, or physics, or 4+ years of professional experience building automation for practical engineering use cases in lieu of a degree
5+ years of experience in software engineering focusing on automation tools and/or AI integrations
5+ years of programming experience in Python
Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed
Ability to satisfy U.S. Government export regulations and ITAR requirements

Nice to Have

Track record of building tools that end users adopted, including gathering requirements directly from users
Experience processing large engineering or scientific datasets using pandas and NumPy
Background building code or configuration generators from a source of truth
Hands-on creation of complex agentic AI systems, prompt engineering, tool calling, and MCP servers
Experience designing evaluations for LLM-based tools alongside deterministic scripts
Integration experience with REST APIs
Working knowledge of PostgreSQL, non-relational, and vector databases with strong SQL skills
Full-stack web application development experience using React, TypeScript, FastAPI, or Flask
Development proficiency on Linux, Git, CI/CD, monitoring, Docker, and Kubernetes
Familiarity with hardware engineering concepts or a background as a hardware or test engineer moving into software
