About this role

Role Overview

The Senior AI Security Engineer position at Backblaze is a remote opportunity available for candidates located in Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, or Mexico. This hands-on role centers on designing and implementing security safeguards for internal artificial intelligence usage, focusing heavily on developer protection, runtime security, and agentic systems.

Key Responsibilities

Agentic AI Safeguards: Architect and implement guardrails for tool-using AI systems, including tool access controls, allowlists, context and memory isolation, and step-level validation of agent actions aligned with the OWASP Agentic AI Top 10.
Runtime Security Controls: Build enforcement mechanisms that govern AI behavior at execution time through interceptors, proxies, middleware, policy decision layers, rate limits, execution bounds, and kill-switches.
Non-Human Identity (NHI): Design identity and access controls for agents and automation, featuring short-lived credentials, scoped permissions, separation of human and non-human access, and clear binding of identity to task context.
Observability & Detection: Implement logging and tracing for AI prompts, tool usage, and decision flows while building detection capabilities using behavioral baselining and anomaly detection techniques.
Threat Modeling (MAESTRO): Perform agentic system threat modeling using MAESTRO to map trust boundaries and attack paths, translating findings into practical safeguards and detection logic.
Developer Safeguards: Protect developers utilizing AI tools by preventing sensitive data exposure, validating generated code, and enabling secure usage of AI-assisted development tools like Cursor, Codex, and Claude Code.

Requirements

Bring a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in security engineering or backend systems.
Demonstrate proven experience designing and deploying runtime enforcement layers and identity and access systems for non-human entities.
Possess strong programming skills with a preference for Python, alongside competencies in Java, Go, or TypeScript.
Showcase practical experience using AI-assisted development tools in real workflows with a solid understanding of associated security risks.
Bring familiarity with logging, monitoring, detection systems, and API or service interactions.
Maintain practical familiarity with agentic AI systems, tool-integrated LLM workflows, and OWASP guidance for AI and agent risks.
Understand NIST AI RMF concepts, CSA workload and machine identity guidance, Zero Trust for non-human identities, secrets management, and observability tooling like ELK and OpenTelemetry.

Nice to Have

Experience securing internal AI platforms or developer-facing AI tools.
Background in threat hunting, detection engineering, or adversarial testing.
Familiarity with agent frameworks such as LlamaIndex and LangChain.
Experience mentoring engineers and guiding secure design practices.
