Role Overview
Boku is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Backend to join its Banking and Settlement department in Singapore. This role suits an experienced developer looking to design and build brand-new payment infrastructure from scratch within an autonomous innovation team.
Key Responsibilities
This is a greenfield development position focused entirely on creating new software rather than maintaining existing systems. The backend work involves designing production-grade services utilizing Java and Spring Boot to achieve high throughput, minimal latency, and high availability. Responsibilities include building event-driven APIs, handling payment initiation, managing reconciliation and settlement flows, and ensuring fault tolerance with circuit breakers and retry logic. Engineers will develop core payout, card processing, and FX components from the ground up, including payout engines and cash forecasting services. Additional duties involve establishing CI/CD pipelines, configuring container builds with Docker and Kubernetes, and implementing strict observability metrics from day one.
Requirements
Candidates must bring five or more years of backend engineering experience, featuring deep expertise in Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem. Applicants need demonstrable experience building high-throughput distributed payment or financial services systems, alongside a strong understanding of payment architecture like idempotency and settlement flows. Essential technical proficiencies include relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, messaging systems like Kafka, and container-based deployment tools including Docker and Kubernetes. The position also requires familiarity with PCI DSS compliant system design, secure coding practices, and strong communication abilities for working within globally distributed teams.
Nice to Have
Preferred qualifications include React frontend development experience for internal tools and dashboards, background knowledge in FX processing, treasury systems, or multi-currency settlement, and familiarity with financial messaging standards like ISO 20022 or SWIFT. Practical experience building or integrating LLM-powered features into production services, utilizing AI agentic workflows, and leveraging AWS Bedrock or AI-assisted development tools will also be considered advantageously.
