The Senior Software Engineer position at Hiya involves building and scaling AI-driven scam and spam detection systems that protect hundreds of millions of users worldwide from fraudulent calls. Operating out of Budapest, Hungary, with a flexible remote working model, this role suits an experienced developer who wants to tackle complex distributed systems challenges and shape the future of trusted voice communication.

Key Responsibilities

Own the end-to-end development lifecycle for spam and scam detection infrastructure, covering everything from research and initial proposals to implementation, testing, deployment, maintenance, and monitoring.
Design and construct frameworks that grant data scientists secure, privacy-aware, and regulation-compliant access to call data for building advanced detection models.
Participate in an on-call rotation to quickly recognize, diagnose, and resolve production issues while continuously improving system reliability and resilience.
Evaluate critical tradeoffs between immediate tactical fixes and durable, long-term technical solutions during production incidents.
Collaborate proactively with cross-functional partners including product managers, data scientists, and engineering peers to align technical choices with strategic business goals.
Drive collaborative design discussions and establish engineering patterns that enhance overall system quality, long-term maintainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Requirements

4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Strong expertise in distributed systems, microservices, network architecture, and database systems.
Proven track record of operating distributed systems in production environments.
Demonstrated ability to quickly recognize, diagnose, and resolve production issues.
Strong focus on service quality, system reliability, and resilience.
Ability to work independently on implementation while knowing when to engage others in architectural discussions.
Technical background that may include RxM engineering, TCP/IP, DNS resolution, and web backend development.

Nice to Have

6+ years of software engineering experience.
Experience building infrastructure or frameworks to support machine learning and data science workflows.
Functional programming experience.
Familiarity with data processing pipelines, specifically Kafka or similar technologies.
Experience with client-side processing pipelines.
Background in DevOps, monitoring, and observability.
Prior participation in on-call rotations.
