About this role

Breeze is currently hiring a Senior Fraud and Risk Engineer to join the team in New York City on a hybrid basis. This strategic position suits an experienced professional ready to own, build, and scale advanced risk architecture for a global payments platform.

Role Overview

In this capacity, you will take ownership of the risk infrastructure powering the commerce platform at Breeze. You will design and implement fraud detection systems across a diverse merchant portfolio, balancing transaction approval rates with robust fraud prevention. The role involves working extensively with modern platforms like Sift and Sardine to construct a comprehensive multi-merchant risk engine. By driving continuous improvements in fraud metrics, you will enable merchants to focus on selling while the platform handles complex risk behind the scenes.

Key Responsibilities

Own and evolve the platform fraud risk engine by integrating Sift machine learning scores and Sardine rules across various merchant categories.
Design and maintain a scalable rules architecture incorporating category defaults, merchant-specific overrides, velocity checks, and blocklists.
Continuously tune detection thresholds and data features across different merchant segments to optimize approval rates and minimize fraudulent activity.
Establish feedback loops utilizing manual review results and chargeback data to refine detection accuracy and retrain models.
Partner directly with risk operations teams to translate real-world fraud patterns into automated technical rules.
Oversee the onboarding of new merchants into the risk framework, solving cold-start issues and calibrating safety controls for unique verticals.
Monitor core metrics including approval ratios, chargeback frequency, and false positive rates.
Collaborate across product, engineering, and operations departments to ensure risk systems integrate smoothly with the wider platform.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical working experience.
Minimum of 6 years of professional experience in fraud or risk engineering within fintech, marketplaces, payments, or acquiring processor environments.
Proven hands-on background integrating and running third-party fraud tools such as Sift, Sardine, Forter, Featurespace, Feedzai, or Kount.
Demonstrated experience designing risk systems for multi-merchant setups, including segmentation, shared models, and merchant-specific strategies.
Strong comprehension of payment infrastructure, transaction flows, fraud vectors, and rules engine design.
Deep operational knowledge covering manual reviews, chargeback handling, and false-positive reduction.
Ability to drive fraud systems end-to-end from architecture and production deployment to iterative measurement.
Highly analytical mindset focused on data-driven outcomes, experimentation, and cross-functional collaboration.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with PCI compliance standards, 3DS protocols, and PSP-level risk tooling.
Prior practical experience dealing with high-risk commercial verticals such as gaming, digital goods, or crypto.
