About this role

The Senior Firmware Engineer I - Batteries role at Axon involves contributing to AIoT device-level firmware infrastructure within the Platform and Firmware development team in Seattle, WA or Scottsdale, AZ. This position suits an experienced embedded systems professional dedicated to advancing safety and justice technology through specialized battery firmware development.

Role Overview

As a core member of the Platform and Firmware battery sub-team, the professional focuses heavily on battery safety, thermals, health, charging, runtime profiling, and fleet-wide metrics. The work environment heavily integrates AI coding and data-analysis tools to compress routine tasks, allowing engineers to concentrate on expert battery safety logic, bench validation, and root-cause decisions. Most Axon products rely on batteries, placing a significant emphasis on battery traits across complex system-on-chips, power management integrated circuits, USB-C intricacies, and fuel gauges.

Key Responsibilities

Implement and verify firmware for battery safety logic, fuel-gauging logic, accelerated battery charging with thermal considerations, and state of health RMA targets.
Develop eLinux user-space daemons that override power management and leverage Qualcomm system-on-chip PMICs.
Implement and manage firmware patches for USB-C sub-systems where power routes for battery charging and related topics like moisture detection.
Deploy fleet-wide battery metrics across over 500,000 devices using Splunk dashboards and alerting, leveraging AI-assisted analysis for degradation trends.
Diagnose and debug products returned by customers using AI tools to triage logs and draft remediation reports for leadership.
Collaborate closely with electrical engineering battery teams, support runtime profiling with joulescopes and automated test systems, and write concise test plans.
Build and advance automated test systems with custom battery-focused hardware fixtures to prevent regressions across permutations.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent field.
Eight or more years of real-world industry firmware or embedded experience developing battery-powered Internet of Things products.
Practical experience with battery and power management sub-systems, safety, and thermals.
Proficiency in programming using C, C++, Rust, Golang, and/or Python.
Working knowledge of boot-loaders, system-on-chips, reading datasheets and schematics, and using electrical lab bench equipment.
Strong understanding of computer architecture, peripherals, operating systems, concurrency, and networking concepts.
Experience with kernel and user-space embedded Linux, including Yocto, OpenWRT, or other embedded distributions for board support packaging.
Mindset geared toward data-driven engineering excellence and daily hands-on use of AI coding and analysis tools.
