Role Overview

CloudZero is expanding its engineering team to manage increasingly complex data challenges and a rapidly growing customer base. In this role, the selected candidate takes ownership of the real-time ingestion path and sets the standards for system reliability, observability, and performance across the entire organization. The platform handles billions of events daily across major cloud providers, requiring advanced engineering solutions rather than routine ticket closing.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of the reliability practice for the real-time ingestion path, defining SLOs that cross team boundaries and resolving complex failure modes.
Build reliability tooling including load generators, fault-injection harnesses, and deployment safety checks using production Python.
Automate deployments, scaling, backups, and limit changes to eliminate manual, repetitive operational tasks.
Partner with product engineering to design resilient services, review operational complexity, and embed SLOs into shared templates.
Maintain CloudFormation and SAM modules to provision reliable, cost-efficient cloud resources end-to-end.
Instrument systems for rapid failure detection and debugging using data rather than guesswork.

Requirements

Strong production Python skills used as a primary language for testing, maintaining, and scaling services.
Prior experience defining and managing Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
Hands-on background operating asynchronous, event-driven systems with a strong understanding of back-pressure, consumer lag, and partial failure.
Minimum of 5 years of experience building and operating distributed systems in AWS.
Practical experience using Infrastructure as Code tools such as CloudFormation, SAM, Terraform, or Pulumi.
Demonstrated ability to instrument systems using monitoring platforms like Datadog, Prometheus, Splunk, or Sumo Logic.
Strong documentation habits and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

Practical experience with chaos engineering or building load-testing practices.
Background working with internal developer portals such as Backstage or Cortex.
Experience with test automation, ephemeral test environments, or GitHub Actions at scale.
Familiarity with LLM-backed tooling used daily by software engineers.
