Role Overview

Close is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Backend Platform team on a 100% remote basis within the USA. This role suits a seasoned Python developer who is excited about building internal platforms, developer tools, and AI-driven engineering workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Expand DevDawg and Spice, which include cloud development environments and automated review and root-cause tooling for pull requests.
Build paved roads for the API layer encompassing REST blueprints, GraphQL schema, OpenAPI, realtime features, and auth plumbing.
Modernize the backend framework layer by working on web and async compute frameworks, performance, and migrations such as Flask to FastAPI.
Own production visibility through observability, metrics, alerting, and readiness standards.
Ship shared backend services and primitives like eventing patterns, database migration guardrails, and internal admin frameworks.
Set guardrails for coding agents in the backend through static analysis, linting, hooks, and test harnesses.

Requirements

Seasoned background in Python engineering, setting architectural patterns.
Experience with Go, Rust, or TypeScript alongside Python.
AI-native production experience with LLM-backed or agentic workflows.
Daily use of coding agents and a strong perspective on developer tooling.
Fluent in observability, production practices, telemetry, tracing, and debugging incidents.
Opinionated about designing internet-facing APIs for applications, agents, and humans.
Battle-tested experience debugging performance issues and owning critical systems.

Nice to Have

Experience building internal developer platforms or AI developer tools.

Salary and Benefits

Competitive compensation ranging from $140,000 to $210,000 USD per year, plus an organization-wide goal-based bonus.
Approximately 5 weeks of paid time off to start, plus a 1-week all-company Winter Holiday Break and paid US holidays, with 2 extra days earned per year of service.
80% work option allowing a choice between a standard 5-day week or a 4-day week at 80% pay.
