Role Overview

G2 operates a software marketplace and has joined forces with Capterra, SoftwareAdvice, and GetApp to build an online data source for software insights. Sitting within the Product organization, the Principal Data Scientist connects software vendors with buyers through ads, reviews, and agentic evaluation. The position focuses on building models, designing auctions, and shipping production systems while evangelizing data science best practices across the company.

Key Responsibilities

Own the experimentation standard for G2 and G2 Digital Markets by consolidating practices into a single approach covering design, randomization, metrics, guardrails, and sample size.
Work directly with engineering teams on instrumentation, assignment, and platform behavior to drive adoption of experimentation standards.
Define end-to-end requirements for holistic experimentation, including platform needs, telemetry, metric layers, and tooling.
Design methods suited to actual traffic and iteration constraints, building a portfolio for different volume regimes and decision speeds.
Drive the exploration of modern experimentation methods such as Bayesian decision frameworks, sequential testing, and multi-armed bandits.
Teach data science practices across stakeholders, raise the quality of experiment interpretation, and communicate test results clearly.

Requirements

8+ years of relevant experience in data science, applied statistics, or a closely related field with a focus on experimentation, or a PhD in a quantitative discipline plus 6+ years.
Deep expertise in experimental design and causal inference, including power and sensitivity analysis, variance reduction, and multiple testing correction.
Working command of both frequentist and Bayesian approaches with sound judgment in choosing between them.
Demonstrated experience designing experimentation methodology for a real product.
Track record of setting technical standards that other teams adopted and influencing engineering partners without authority.
Strong applied experience with time series and web or behavioral data at scale.
Fluency in Python and SQL, alongside comfort in modern data ecosystems like Snowflake, Spark, Airflow, and dbt.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

10+ years of relevant experience, including ownership of experimentation practice or platform across multiple products or properties.
Hands-on experience taking modern inference methods into production, such as sequential testing or bandit-based allocation.
Experience with low-traffic experimentation, quasi-experimental methods, and two-sided marketplace experimentation.
Experience serving as a technical lead, mentoring senior data scientists, and reviewing technical designs.
Experience with the evaluation of machine learning or large language model systems.
Contributions to the experimentation community through publications, open-source work, or conference participation.
PhD in a quantitative discipline or MS in STEM.
