Role Overview

The Principal AI Engineer works within the Context Engine team to build and refine the knowledge layer utilized by AI agents interacting with enterprise data in Elasticsearch. Responsibilities include managing extraction automations, retrieval tools, and memory based on telemetry and offline evaluations. The position requires writing production code in TypeScript, designing evaluation frameworks, and establishing technical standards for agentic behavior across a distributed team.

Key Responsibilities

Own the production improvement loop for the Context Engine by identifying failure modes, implementing fixes, and validating outcomes through offline evaluations, customer conversations, and telemetry.
Define safety procedures for iterating on agents and skills, including prompt versioning, rollouts, regression coverage, and staged evaluations.
Design telemetry systems to capture data from agent traces, tool calls, and knowledge retrieval, integrating findings into Elasticsearch and feedback dashboards.
Partner with the data science team to establish evaluation strategies, golden datasets, and quality, latency, and cost evaluators.
Review designs and pull requests, mentor engineers in evaluation-driven development, and author technical proposals that guide the product roadmap.

Requirements

Ten or more years of software engineering experience, including recent years operating AI-driven products on production traffic with public APIs and evolving data models.
Demonstrated track record of evaluation-driven product improvement through tracing, user feedback analysis, and metric measurement.
Direct experience building agents with state and memory while iterating on prompts, skills, and tool behavior in production.
Familiarity with MCP, including publishing public MCP servers and tools.
Experience designing AI system telemetry for engineering and product decisions.
Experience running end-to-end product experiments involving instrumentation and unattended execution.
Strong backend engineering skills in Python or TypeScript, covering APIs, stateful workflows, data pipelines, and production services.
Ability to collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product managers while communicating trade-offs clearly.
Pragmatic, low-ego approach suitable for an async-first distributed environment.

Nice to Have

Experience with agent frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI, or the Claude Agent SDK.
Background in agentic retrieval and knowledge representation.
Practical experience using Elasticsearch.
