Role Overview

The Senior Java Software Engineer focuses on the Elasticsearch Inference API, which serves as the integration layer between Elasticsearch and external machine learning services. This position involves developing and maintaining the plugin framework and REST API, spanning protocol design, streaming, asynchronous execution, and billing integration.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain integrations with internal systems and external inference providers, covering schema negotiation, server-sent events streaming, and error normalisation.
Contribute to the internal architecture of the inference plugin, including task settings, chunking strategies, rate limiting, and provider-level configuration.
Review open source contributions to the codebase and work alongside third-party engineers to ensure adherence to technology standards.
Participate in an on-call rotation to handle inference-related incidents.
Write comprehensive tests, including unit tests utilizing ESTestCase, YAML-based REST integration tests, and rolling-upgrade tests.

Requirements

Five or more years of production Java experience, including contributions to a large and established Java codebase.
Practical knowledge of core Java, standard library data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
Experience designing ergonomic APIs and evaluating tradeoffs.
Familiarity with low-level Java concepts such as concurrency, parallelism, and classloaders.
Demonstrated ability to use artificial intelligence to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while retaining final outcome ownership.
Capacity to collaborate across functions and projects while working autonomously in a distributed team using transparent communication.

Nice to Have

Knowledge of JDK internals including modules, the Java memory model, garbage collection, database load, and caching techniques.
Experience with machine learning systems.
Prior contributions to and ownership of open source projects.
Familiarity with Java build tools such as Gradle and Maven, with a strong preference for Gradle.
Experience working within a platform team or developer productivity team.
