PhD Intern, Data Science (2027)
About this role
You will own an end-to-end data science project, taking it from initial problem framing and technical execution through to final recommendations that can influence products and strategy. The Data Science team collaborates across product, engineering, design, marketing, sales, and operations to help the organization make informed decisions using data. Candidates bring rigorous research training to address open-ended questions about emerging product behaviors, ecosystem dynamics, and measurement methodologies.
This position exists to support complex analytical challenges using advanced methodologies such as causal inference, machine learning, and custom analytical systems. Ideal candidates possess a curious and self-starting mindset, thriving in ambiguous environments where research translates directly into real-world impact.
What you will do
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate ambiguous product, platform, or business inquiries into well-defined data science problems.
- Examine user, product, and business datasets to uncover actionable insights and formulate clear recommendations.
- Design and evaluate experiments, metrics, statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and analytical frameworks.
- Articulate methodological assumptions, tradeoffs, limitations, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Manage an independent internship project from problem formulation to final delivery, with potential pathways toward publication.
What you need
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program focused on Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Economics, Operations Research, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Demonstrated background in conducting independent research such as a thesis or equivalent research milestone.
- Proficiency in scripting languages like Python or R alongside strong SQL skills for handling large-scale datasets.
- Proven fluency in core research methodologies including statistics, experimentation, machine learning, causal inference, econometrics, or AI/LLMs.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively and connect quantitative analysis to strategic decisions.
Nice to have
- Prior industry or applied research experience involving experimental design, causal inference, forecasting, or user research.
- Publications or research relevant to applied data science.
- Experience or interest in AI product measurement, LLM analytics, recommendation systems, search, personalization, or evaluating AI features.
Benefits
- Housing stipend
- Travel reimbursement
