About this role

Role Overview

The Member of Technical Staff, Systems Infrastructure role at Fireworks AI is a full-time position based in San Mateo, California, with remote flexibility available for upcoming or recent PhD graduates. This opportunity is well-suited for systems researchers who want to translate academic concepts into production-scale fleet operations.

Key Responsibilities

Architect, construct, and maintain foundational infrastructure systems designed for massive-scale machine learning training and inference.
Analyze and quantify system metrics by developing benchmarks, traces, and simulators to evaluate performance prior to implementation.
Detect and eliminate system bottlenecks ranging from kernel and driver layers to scheduler rules using empirical data.
Transition research theories into production-ready software capable of enduring real-world workloads, hardware failures, and customer demands.
Partner directly with inference and research groups to ensure mutual alignment between infrastructure design and model architecture.
Shape technical roadmaps by monitoring emerging hardware trends, interconnects, and academic systems literature.

Requirements

Possess a recently completed PhD within the past six months or anticipate graduation by December 2026 in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or an allied discipline.
Bring an academic research focus encompassing distributed systems, operating systems, storage architecture, computer networks, scheduling, resource management, computer architecture, or high-performance computing.
Demonstrate expertise in at least one key domain—such as scheduling, distributed storage, or datacenter networking—evidenced by publications, dissertations, or built systems.
Exhibit strong systems programming capabilities utilizing languages like C, C++, Rust, or Go, alongside functional competence in Python.
Prove hands-on experience designing, testing, and measuring real computer systems rather than relying solely on simulations.
Possess clear communication skills to explain intricate systems designs and findings to diverse stakeholders.

Nice to Have

Authored primary publications at premier systems or networking academic conferences including OSDI, SOSP, NSDI, EuroSys, SIGCOMM, ATC, FAST, ASPLOS, MLSys, or SC.
Completed practical industry internships within cloud, HPC, or infrastructure environments, or contributed significantly to open-source systems projects like Kubernetes, Ray, Slurm, vLLM, NCCL, or Ceph.
Practical familiarity handling GPU clusters, accelerator programming models including CUDA, ROCm, or Triton, and heterogeneous computing.
Background operating multi-tenant clusters or working with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure.
Proficiency profiling and debugging performance issues across distributed networks.
Documented research accomplishments through grants, fellowships, patents, or technical competitions.
