Role Overview

Figma is seeking a Manager for Engineering, AI Observability to lead a team of six engineers focused on reliability, scalability, and platform evolution. This role covers both core observability systems, such as metrics, logs, and distributed tracing, and an emerging AI observability pipeline. The chosen leader will set technical direction, establish data quality standards, and shape an early-stage platform that internal engineering teams rely on.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and scale a team of six engineers dedicated to observability and AI observability platforms.
Own and evolve a privacy-safe telemetry pipeline that aggregates traces, conversations, and model data for classification and evaluation.
Manage the core observability stack, including Datadog, to maintain high availability and signal-to-noise ratios across metrics, logs, and traces.
Define technical strategy for instrumentation standards, libraries, agents, and operators company-wide.
Investigate and deploy AI-driven methods for anomaly detection, root cause analysis, signal correlation, and operational automation.
Collaborate across infrastructure, product engineering, finance, and security to provide transparent visibility into system health and cost efficiency.
Guide engineer career growth, technical mentorship, and high-quality execution.

Requirements

Minimum of 4 years of experience leading and growing engineering teams within infrastructure, observability, platform, or AI systems.
Proven track record of delivering reliable production systems at scale.
Strong background in distributed systems with a platform-building mindset.
Hands-on expertise in observability, AI system telemetry, metrics, logs, distributed tracing, classification, or evaluations.
Familiarity with modern tooling such as Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, LLM tracing, prompt versioning, and evaluation workflows.
High operational standards encompassing instrumentation, data quality, SLO design, and incident response.

Nice to Have

Experience spanning both classic observability and AI observability.
Background in creating AI telemetry-assisted feedback loops for services and AI products.
Experience optimizing infrastructure efficiency, including cost attribution and forecasting.
History of designing company-wide observability standards and agent-based integrations.
Application of machine learning or AI to anomaly detection and operational automation.
Experience mentoring teams through major architectural changes or platform expansions.

The annual base salary range for this position is $258,000 to $376,000 USD, with actual compensation determined by qualifications, experience, and location.
