As a Machine Learning Intern in Zurich, you will own a scoped machine learning project from problem definition to implementation. You will prototype, evaluate, and improve machine learning features across discovery, ads, and search while receiving guidance from experienced engineers.
This role exists to bring emerging talent into applied research and engineering initiatives, offering hands-on experience with large-scale systems. Ideal candidates are currently pursuing advanced degrees and bring practical background in applying machine learning or AI concepts through coursework, research, or prior projects.
What you will do
- Own a scoped machine learning project from problem definition through experimentation, implementation and communication of results.
- Contribute to applied machine learning and AI research that informs Pinterest product experiences.
- Collect, analyze and synthesize data to develop data-driven machine learning models.
- Write clean, efficient and maintainable code, supported by appropriate documentation and testing.
- Apply relevant machine learning techniques, including natural language processing or graph-based approaches, to modeling and ranking problems.
- Break down scoped technical problems, propose approaches and implement solutions with guidance from the team.
- Deliver assigned project milestones, share progress and findings with teammates and seek guidance when needed.
What you need
- Working towards a Master's or PhD degree in Computer Science, ML, NLP, Statistics, Information Sciences or related field.
- Experience applying machine learning or AI concepts through research, coursework, projects or internships.
- Knowledge of machine learning areas such as ranking, computer vision, NLP, content recommendations, embedding, or information retrieval.
- Experience with big data technologies like Hadoop or Spark and scalable realtime systems that process stream data.
- Proficiency in at least one systems language such as Java, C++, Python or one ML framework like Tensorflow, Pytorch, or MLFlow.
- Experience in research and in solving analytical problems.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to find solutions for open-ended problems.

What is the work location and remote policy for this internship?
This onsite internship is based in the Zurich office and runs in a full-time capacity during typical business hours between Monday and Friday. The role requires being in the office for in-person collaboration two to three weekdays per week and candidates need to be within a commutable distance of Zurich.
