Role Overview

Pinterest seeks a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Content Visual AI to steer the technical direction of foundational content understanding systems. Operating within the User and Content Foundations organization, the professional will shape multi-quarter strategies for visual representation learning, multimodal content comprehension, and large language model personalization. The position requires guiding ambiguous engineering initiatives from the initial research phase through production and cross-functional adoption.

Key Responsibilities

Determine the multi-quarter strategy and technical path for foundational machine learning capabilities regarding visual representation, multimodal content understanding, and personalized large language models.
Drive complex scientific and technical projects from problem definition and research strategy to experimentation, production, and adoption.
Construct reusable embeddings, semantic signals, representations, and machine learning infrastructure while advancing methods like vision-language models, large language models, sequence modeling, self-supervised learning, retrieval, and distillation.
Collaborate with Product, Data Science, Applied Science, and Engineering groups to turn foundational features into tangible product results and shape cross-functional roadmaps.
Set high standards for data pipelines, modeling, distributed inference and training, experimentation, evaluation, and operational excellence while mentoring engineering and scientific personnel.

Requirements

Minimum of 7 years of professional industry experience, which includes at least 2 years spent leading technical teams.
Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in machine learning, computer science, or equivalent practical industry background.
Documented publication history at top-tier data mining, machine learning, or multimodal conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ECCV, ACL, KDD, and SIGIR, or demonstrable open-source machine learning experience.
Practical background in large-scale distributed training for generative models including large language models, vision-language models, and sequence models.
Direct experience utilizing distributed tools for machine learning data pipelines like Spark, Hive, and MapReduce.
Background in steering ambiguous research projects focused on building and refining generative artificial intelligence models for recommendation systems, search, and content understanding.
Demonstrated technical leadership in mapping roadmaps across modeling, data pipelines, and production, along with aligning stakeholders on execution plans and priorities.
