Role Overview

As a Machine Learning Engineer III on the Routing Cost team at Mapbox, you will spearhead the design, building, and delivery of recommendation systems for the routing cost engine. Working alongside a large navigation organization of roughly 80 engineers, you will take charge of technical strategy and feature implementation. Your daily responsibilities will include optimizing pipelines, collaborating with data scientists, and ensuring high system availability through automated testing and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

Lead engineering teams to execute end-to-end feature implementations within the navigation organization.
Design, construct, optimize, and manage advanced machine learning and data pipelines.
Build automated quality assurance tools and data exploration utilities.
Utilize geospatial algorithms to optimize pipelines, create automated tuning systems, and implement outlier detection.
Partner closely with data scientists to refine models tracking movement patterns and traffic.
Mentor fellow engineers, conduct design reviews, and guide career growth.
Participate in an on-call rotation to guarantee 24/7 system reliability, which may involve response times outside regular working hours.

Requirements

Possess 8 to 10+ years of extensive backend and machine learning engineering experience.
Hands-on expertise with Reinforcement Learning and very large datasets.
Strong background in statistical analysis, data quality control, and optimizing storage.
Experience deploying and managing infrastructure within cloud environments.
Demonstrated commitment to clean code, operational excellence, and robust architecture.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and technical leadership.
