Role Overview
Mapbox seeks a remote Senior AI Engineer for the Location AI department based out of Mapbox UK. This role suits an experienced software professional ready to own technical designs and delivery for multi-component artificial intelligence systems across various product areas.
Key Responsibilities
Define operational parameters for owned products, create measurement frameworks, and build evaluation systems for non-deterministic behavior.
Conduct continuous evaluation of APIs, SDKs, data representations, and reference applications from the end-user perspective.
Drive Minimum Viable Products against technical designs while balancing perfection against functional increments.
Construct data pipelines and associated tooling for ingestion, conflation, entity resolution, and quality checks.
Review external datasets, models, and research benchmarks to determine integration versus internal creation.
Design feedback loops and instrumentation so system failures provide adequate reproduction context.
Establish boundaries between models and called tools, improving harnesses and managing state context.
Optimize request latency and cost via streaming, partial results, caching, model routing, and prompt structures.
Build internal developer tools like CLIs and Model Context Protocol integrations.
Participate in an on-call rotation requiring occasional response outside standard working hours, including weekends.
Requirements
Bachelor degree in a STEM discipline alongside five or more years of software engineering background.
Minimum of two years shipping features backed by Large Language Models to real users within on-call production environments.
Direct comprehension of evaluation design for non-deterministic systems.
Data engineering capabilities encompassing SQL, distributed processing frameworks, and accuracy-focused pipelines.
Fluency in tool calling, agent orchestration, and identifying failure modes like stale context or hallucinations.
Working knowledge of multiple agent harnesses and their respective limitations.
Proficiency in Python or TypeScript, plus the ability to read code across various programming languages.
Experience diagnosing latency issues within distributed request paths.
Clear written communication skills utilized across documentation and messaging platforms.
Nice to Have
Geospatial data expertise including routing, geocoding, OpenStreetMap, or address conflation.
Public API or SDK design targeted at external developers.
Background building against MCP or similar tool transports.
Practical experience executing evaluations inside Continuous Integration pipelines.
Automotive or in-vehicle infotainment background spanning Android Auto or CarPlay.
Voice pipeline knowledge covering streaming ASR, TTS, barge-in, or endpointing.
Experience operating under compute constraints or intermittent connectivity.
