About this role

Witness AI is hiring a full-time Machine Learning Engineer to design, build, and evaluate language models for innovative AI security products in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position suits an experienced practitioner with a strong software engineering background and a passion for shaping reliable, interpretable, and safe language models.

Role Overview

As a Machine Learning Engineer at Witness AI, the professional will own the complete end-to-end pipeline, ranging from dataset curation and preprocessing to experiment design, evaluation, and result visualization. This opportunity merges applied research with robust engineering, placing a strong emphasis on producing secure and reliable language models. The selected candidate will operate within a fast-moving environment dedicated to stopping jailbreaks, data exfiltration, and shadow AI.

Key Responsibilities

Build scalable pipelines to collect, preprocess, and manage datasets specifically for training and evaluating large language models.
Design and execute experiments to test language models for accuracy, robustness, fairness, and safety.
Develop dashboards, reports, and visualizations to clearly communicate evaluation results, data trends, and failure cases.
Create and leverage knowledge graphs to structure data, enrich evaluations, and improve context-driven model performance.
Collaborate closely with researchers to translate fresh concepts into engineering workflows, and partner with data scientists to automate quality assurance checks and guardrails.
Fine-tune, optimize, and integrate models seamlessly into production systems while prioritizing reliability, scalability, monitoring, and CI/CD best practices.
Contribute actively to machine learning tooling and experimentation frameworks to accelerate the team's iteration speed.

Requirements

Bring two to five or more years of professional experience working in machine learning or data science, ideally within a security or infrastructure-heavy environment.
Possess a strong software engineering background utilizing Python, testing frameworks like pytest or unittest, and CI/CD tools.
Show proficiency in key machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
Demonstrate practical experience with data engineering tools including Spark, Kafka, and Airflow.
Maintain familiarity with deploying models on cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure, alongside containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes.
Hold a solid knowledge base in machine learning fundamentals covering supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, and natural language processing.
Demonstrate an interest or background in cybersecurity, adversarial machine learning, anomaly detection, or related fields.
Exhibit a startup mindset, remaining comfortable working in fast-moving, ambiguous settings with a sharp focus on shipping and iterating quickly.

Nice to Have

Research or industry experience focusing on adversarial machine learning, model robustness, or explainable artificial intelligence.
Experience building interactive dashboards dedicated to model monitoring and visualization.
Documented contributions to open-source machine learning, natural language processing, or security projects.

About the Company

Witness AI invented intent-based artificial intelligence security. While legacy tools typically monitor what users say to artificial intelligence, the company understands what users are trying to accomplish. This approach successfully stops jailbreaks, data exfiltration, and shadow AI before any damage occurs. Witness AI provides critical visibility into how employees and systems use artificial intelligence by capturing prompts, responses, and agent activity so security teams can monitor risk, investigate incidents, and enforce guardrails in real time.
