Role Overview

Affordable Car & Home Insurance is seeking a Head of Data Science on a 12-month fixed-term contract for its London office, operating on a hybrid model of three days a week. The data science team functions as a primary commercial engine across product teams, pricing, and claims, handling tasks ranging from traditional machine learning for risk-based decisioning to generative AI and operational automation. This role requires a combination of people management, technical direction, and close partnership with engineering and product functions.

Key Responsibilities

Identify and prioritize high-leverage data science opportunities to deliver measurable bottom-line contributions and strategic commercial alignment.
Manage the people and culture agenda by setting goals, handling performance and development conversations, and keeping the team engaged.
Provide hands-on technical leadership to set and maintain rigorous technical standards across the full modeling and data lifecycle.
Represent data science in cross-functional collaborations with engineering, product, and pricing teams to navigate technical direction and trade-offs.
Foster collective ownership of technical standards, coaching team members to improve shared tooling and industry best practices.

Requirements

Excellent leadership and team management capabilities.
Extensive background as a senior data science individual contributor with commercial experience delivering end-to-end machine learning solutions.
Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction across data science and engineering, including shaping scalable model and service integration patterns.
Strong stakeholder management expertise with the confidence to communicate trade-offs and collaborate with C-suite and senior stakeholders.

Nice to Have

Background working in insurance, fraud, or another regulated decision-making domain.
Experience contributing to generative AI strategy and leading data scientists to deliver measurable business value through Gen AI solutions.
