Role Overview

The Group Legal Counsel operates as a senior individual contributor who takes total ownership of all group-wide legal affairs. The professional stepping into this position will enjoy complete autonomy to establish processes, build out the legal function, and provide strategic guidance directly to the executive leadership team and the board.

Key Responsibilities

Take full ownership of commercial contracting and negotiation throughout the group, covering master service agreements, partner deals, enterprise client contracts, vendor terms, channel agreements, and nondisclosure agreements.
Enforce contract compliance, manage disputes, and coordinate breach responses across the global customer base.
Design and maintain group contract templates, playbooks, and self-serve legal tools to prevent operational bottlenecks.
Utilize AI platforms such as Claude and Spellbook for contract drafting, legal research, summarization, and initial reviews.
Oversee relationships with external law firms across New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia, integrating specialist guidance when necessary.
Ensure ongoing corporate compliance, regulatory filings, and proper governance documentation across all international subsidiaries.
Identify, evaluate, and mitigate operational and legal risks, including insurance concerns and regional compliance matters.
Manage global office leases to ensure consistency with corporate property strategies.
Partner alongside the Chief Financial Officer and executive team on strategic initiatives and deliver proactive legal counsel.

Requirements

Minimum of five years of post-qualification experience, ideally gained at a top-tier New Zealand law firm.
Previous international exposure and a background heavily focused on commercial law and the technology sector, with SaaS industry experience preferred.
Capability to make sound commercial decisions alongside pure legal analysis.
Active user of artificial intelligence tools who can discuss practical legal applications during the interview process.
Naturally collaborative approach with a desire to engage directly with internal business operations rather than working from a distance.
