About this role

Frontdesk AI is seeking a Founding Backend Engineer (AI Focus) to join its Atrix team in New York City. This full-time position is ideal for an experienced developer who wants to build foundational backend architecture for AI-native life sciences workflows.

Role Overview

As an early backend engineer, you will serve as a core builder of the Atrix backend infrastructure, creating AI-native workflows that ingest unstructured data, structure it with artificial intelligence, and deliver reliable insights. You will work on scalable data pipelines, robust APIs, and real-time inference systems, supporting complex agent workflows and customer-facing dashboards. Your daily efforts will involve building retrieval pipelines, optimizing asynchronous background workers, and designing secure, clean APIs. You will collaborate directly with the Engineering Lead, CEO, and cross-functional teams spanning product, AI, and go-to-market while influencing architectural standards.

Key Responsibilities

Design and take ownership of major modules within the backend architecture, including APIs, workers, and orchestration systems.

Optimize the performance and reliability of data processing pipelines and AI inference systems.

Build and maintain LLM-powered backend features and multi-step execution workflows.

Partner with product and artificial intelligence teams to launch production-grade features.

Enhance the observability, traceability, and modularity of underlying backend systems.

Deliver customer-focused features while maintaining high standards for security and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of backend engineering experience within fast-paced product teams.

At least 2 years of professional Python experience, including asynchronous programming.

Demonstrated expertise using frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django.

Strong proficiency working with SQL, specifically PostgreSQL and ORMs like SQLAlchemy.

Proven experience building robust APIs, background workers, and distributed systems.

Clear understanding of how large language models, embeddings, and RAG workflows operate.

Prior startup experience or demonstrated ownership of complex backend projects.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with orchestration tools including Celery, LangChain, or LlamaIndex.

Exposure to RAG or context injection workflow implementations.

Experience utilizing AWS, Terraform, Kafka, or PyTorch.

Background knowledge in healthcare, data security, or regulated industries.
