Frontdesk AI is seeking a Founding AI Engineer to join the Manhattan Labs team in the San Francisco Bay Area for a full-time position. This crucial role involves shaping an AI-native compliance platform that serves community banks and financial institutions, making it an ideal opportunity for an engineer with startup experience looking to take ownership of core technical decisions.

Role Overview

This is a foundational engineering position where the selected candidate will define and build the investigative brain used by compliance teams. Working directly with the founding team, the engineer will evolve the platform from an early-stage MVP into a secure, enterprise-grade system. The role focuses on automating complex financial crime compliance workflows, including Know Your Business (KYB) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML), using advanced artificial intelligence.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic systems using complex financial data, establishing clear metrics for accuracy, latency, and cost.
Develop scalable backend services for document processing, asynchronous job queues, case lifecycle orchestration, and risk scoring featuring human-in-the-loop controls.
Productionize AI systems by implementing evaluation pipelines, version management, and safe rollout strategies with guardrails.
Harden the enterprise platform with authentication controls, role-based access, audit trails, backups, and rigorous monitoring.
Establish continuous integration and deployment pipelines, runbooks, and incident response practices from the ground up.
Engage in cutting-edge AI research focused on agentic reasoning over regulatory and financial data.
Collaborate directly with the founders to establish product direction, the technical roadmap, and core architecture.

Requirements

At least 1 year of experience on technical projects, with a strong preference for prior startup experience.
Proficiency in both TypeScript and Python across modern frontend and backend technology stacks.
Hands-on experience successfully shipping RAG systems or LLM integrations into production products for users.
Background handling document processing, entity extraction, and structured data extraction from real-world sources.
Solid understanding of API design, relational databases, and asynchronous job processing systems.
Demonstrated ability to transition a product from a local environment to a reliable production scale.
Strong debugging instincts across data, infrastructure, backend, and frontend boundaries.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with KYC, KYB, AML workflows, sanctions screening, and beneficial ownership data.
Experience utilizing AI orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex.
Exposure to core banking systems, banking APIs, or financial data providers.
Background in document intelligence pipelines and OCR technology.
Previous experience working in fintech, RegTech, or other highly regulated industries.
Cloud deployment knowledge and DevOps expertise within security-sensitive settings.
