Environmental Health & Safety Engineer (AI Supercomputer)
About this role
The ideal candidate for this role is someone who possesses a strong foundation in both environmental stewardship and occupational safety, and who thrives in a demanding, high-stakes environment. This position is central to ensuring the safe construction, expansion, and operation of SpaceX's advanced AI infrastructure and large-scale compute facilities, which are critical to their mission of enabling human life on Mars. The engineer will work within a tightly integrated team, providing essential technical expertise to implement comprehensive environmental, health, and safety programs across complex operations.
This individual will be responsible for developing and maintaining compliance with numerous federal and local regulations, including those from OSHA, EPA, and others. They will collaborate closely with engineering teams and facility managers to conduct hazard assessments and establish robust safety protocols. The core function involves monitoring employee exposure to various hazards and developing corrective actions when standards are not met. This role exists to mitigate risks associated with high-power systems, cooling infrastructure, and hazardous materials inherent in large-scale compute environments.
Success in this role requires a hands-on approach, the ability to develop practical safety solutions within budgetary and scheduling constraints, and a commitment to following the hierarchy of controls to protect personnel, property, and the environment. Candidates who excel at detailed hazard analysis and proactive risk management will be well-suited to contribute significantly to SpaceX's operational integrity.
What you will do
- Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations established by OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
- Collaborate with department leadership, engineering teams, and facility managers to complete job hazard assessments and implement robust health and safety policies and procedures.
- Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards and develop recommendations for remedial actions when safety standards are not met.
- Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, including those from the EPA, CERCLA, RCRA, and DOT.
- Work closely with AI hardware engineers and construction teams to perform detailed safety reviews of complex operations involving high-power systems and hazardous materials.
- Lead or assist in all aspects of incident investigations, including initial response, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and closure.
- Implement and develop safety and health programs covering areas such as HAZCOM, cryogenics, and electrical safety.
- Develop practical safety solutions to resolve EHS hazards within cost and schedule constraints by applying the safety hierarchy of controls.
- Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure full regulatory compliance.
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans for various events such as fires or chemical spills.
What you need
