About this role

Navigating complex regulatory landscapes and shifting AI governance frameworks requires establishing a credible voice among global policymakers and legal institutions. As the founding Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Harvey, you will solve this challenge by building the company's first dedicated policy function from the ground up, shaping how the organization engages with governments, regulators, and bar associations across the US, EMEA, and APAC.

Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy Officer, this leadership position focuses primarily on public policy and stakeholder education regarding AI integration in the legal sector and access to justice. You will define the company narrative, forge direct institutional relationships, and bridge external regulatory developments with internal product and go-to-market teams to support safe, responsible technology deployment in professional services.

What you will do

  • Establish Harvey's government affairs and public policy function by defining engagement strategies, stakeholder relationships, and institutional positioning from a standing start.
  • Cultivate and maintain direct relationships with policymakers, regulators, bar associations, and judicial bodies across the United States and international jurisdictions.
  • Partner with the Chief Strategy Officer, legal leadership, and communications teams to shape public positioning on AI governance, legal professional standards, and access to justice.
  • Serve as a strategic bridge between external regulatory environments and internal product teams to surface compliance requirements and market opportunities.
  • Hire, develop, and lead regional government affairs managers across key global markets while setting up operational infrastructure for policy monitoring and stakeholder tracking.

What you need

  • Bring a career defined by progressive depth in public policy, government affairs, or regulatory work within major technology companies, senior government roles, or advisory firms.
  • Demonstrate a policy-first orientation that prioritizes educating policymakers and building credibility through substance rather than access alone.
  • Possess a proven ability to build functions and establish strategies from a standing start within new institutional landscapes.
  • Maintain deep, trusted relationships with senior government, regulatory, and institutional stakeholders that outlast administrations and election cycles.
  • Demonstrate substantive familiarity with the legal industry, the judiciary, and the regulatory environment governing legal services and artificial intelligence.
  • Offer bipartisan credibility, intellectual integrity, and exceptional written and verbal communication skills for high-stakes settings.

Benefits

  • Build Harvey's government affairs and public policy function from scratch with a direct mandate from the executive team.
  • Operate within a global mandate starting with the US and expanding to EMEA and APAC at a company operating across 60+ countries.
  • Work at the center of critical policy conversations regarding AI, the legal profession, the judiciary, and access to justice.
  • Enjoy a direct line to the CSO and a seat at the table on key strategic initiatives.
