Role Overview

Lilt is hiring a Data Engineering Manager in Indianapolis, IN to take charge of the company's data transformation infrastructure. Reporting to the head of Platform, this position operates as both an individual contributor and a people manager. The incoming leader will establish metric definitions, oversee pipeline costs, and build a new Data sub-team within Platform Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Own the entire data layer by establishing single metric definitions in dbt that remain consistent across Business Operations, Production, Finance, and Product.
Oversee the transformation layer and warehouse by ensuring every pipeline features an assigned owner, automated tests, and a measured, decreasing spend.
Set technical direction by producing written cases for warehouse strategy, the integration of ClickHouse, and API or MCP data exposure.
Build and mentor a new team by hiring a Data Engineer and a Senior Data Scientist, defining their charter, and overseeing delivery, quality, and on-call rotations.
Establish agentic engineering practices by defining how the data team utilizes AI agents for building, testing, and reviewing models alongside human oversight.
Maintain hands-on engineering involvement by reviewing, writing, and shipping SQL, dbt, and Python code.

Requirements

Bring seven or more years of professional experience in data or analytics engineering.
Demonstrate two or more years of experience managing a small team of two to five members, including a history of hiring and developing individual contributors.
Possess strong hands-on fluency in SQL and Python, with proven experience building and maintaining production pipelines and dbt layers.
Show prior ownership of warehouse or pipeline budgets with a documented record of reducing costs through measurable outcomes.
Exhibit direct experience managing data accountability for finance, operations, and go-to-market stakeholders while understanding B2B SaaS metrics.
Leverage AI tools daily with a practical understanding of their limitations, verification needs, and documentation standards.

Nice to Have

Experience standing up a brand new data function from scratch or successfully reviving an abandoned one.
Demonstrated production experience running dbt at scale on BigQuery and operating ClickHouse.
Background in shipping analytics capable of running in both cloud environments and self-hosted on-premise setups.
