Role Overview

In this capacity, the engineer acts as a core technical builder, constructing robust backend systems and infrastructure to support Known. Responsibilities range from creating high-capacity APIs handling millions of requests to developing real-time communication pipelines for text and voice interactions. The role requires designing reliable, performant data architectures capable of scaling alongside the user base while collaborating closely with the founding team across AI, product, design, and fullstack engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Build and design scalable backend services utilizing Node.js and TypeScript, encompassing background job processing, RESTful APIs, and data pipelines for batch and real-time workloads.
Optimize and architect database systems in Postgres, focusing on schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and maintaining data integrity at scale.
Deploy real-time communication infrastructure leveraging WebSockets for chat and WebRTC for audio and video to guarantee low latency and reliability.
Manage and integrate third-party tools, including reservation platforms, payment gateways like Apple and Google Pay, notification services, CDNs, and AI language models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Work alongside AI and machine learning specialists to construct data pipelines and APIs that serve model predictions and support experimentation workflows.
Manage infrastructure, deployment, and system observability by building CI/CD pipelines, optimizing cloud costs, setting up monitoring, and scaling reliability.
Engineer for scale and performance through caching implementation and fast API response times designed to manage rapid traffic growth.

Requirements

Four to six years of professional experience building production backend systems within startups, high-traffic apps, or consumer products.
Advanced proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript, possessing a strong grasp of asynchronous patterns, error handling, and performance tuning.
Expert-level capability with Postgres, including transactions, complex queries, connection pooling, and performance optimization.
Demonstrated background in designing and scaling RESTful APIs, incorporating versioning, authentication, rate limiting, and caching.
Practical experience using cloud platforms like AWS or GCP for storage, compute, networking, and database services.
Familiarity with containerization, orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
Practical background working with WebSockets and WebRTC for real-time communication setups.
Strong comprehension of observability standards, such as logging, tracing, metrics, and alerting best practices.
Dedicated focus on data privacy, security, and compliance as core priorities.
