About this role

The Applied AI Engineer position at Monte Carlo is a full-time remote opportunity based in the Americas, ideal for professionals with a strong background in building autonomous AI systems in production. This role involves turning ambiguous challenges into reliable enterprise features that govern agent trust and observability.

Role Overview

Monte Carlo is searching for a skilled engineer to tackle open-ended problems, from initial research and prototyping through to production deployment. Operating within the SPEDD department, the chosen candidate will design agent-powered capabilities, build safety evaluation infrastructure, and set internal technical standards for leveraging large language models. Working closely with engineering and data science teams, this position requires an individual who thrives in ambiguity and prioritizes shipping functional solutions rapidly.

Key Responsibilities

Navigate open-ended problem statements by researching approaches, prototyping experiments, and integrating successful solutions into the main platform.
Design and ship features powered by autonomous agents, including root-cause analysis, monitor generation, and incident triage.
Construct evaluation infrastructure encompassing golden datasets, regression suites, alongside offline and online scoring mechanisms.
Own retrieval and context pipelines utilizing customer metadata, query history, and lineage while monitoring production agent behavior.
Collaborate directly with data science professionals on detection quality and experiment design.
Establish engineering patterns, internal tooling, and guardrails for utilizing large language models across the team.

Requirements

Demonstrated history of building production-grade autonomous agents with real users and internal loops.
Hands-on ownership of agent evaluation frameworks and post-launch monitoring strategies.
Proficiency in Python alongside a solid understanding of machine learning or data science backend concepts.
Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in software engineering, machine learning, or data science within fast-paced environments.
Ability to work effectively from ambiguous problem statements rather than strict technical specifications.
Daily utilization of AI coding and research tools.

Nice to Have

Practical application of statistics and hypothesis testing.
Experience building and maintaining Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
Background working within data and cloud environments like Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, and Airflow.
