About this role

The AI Field Engineer - Enterprise role at Fireworks AI in San Mateo, California, offers an exciting opportunity to bridge the gap between complex AI capabilities and enterprise production systems. This position is well-suited for a hands-on technical professional with a strong background in customer-facing engineering and machine learning infrastructure.

Role Overview

AI Field Engineers operate as the technical tip of the spear by embedding directly with ambitious customers and technology partners to turn complex AI problems into fast production systems. This role bridges engineering, product, and customer delivery through hands-on coding of proofs of concept, MVPs, and production integrations while handling executive-level architectural discussions. The Enterprise track specifically focuses on large organizations and digital-native companies adopting generative AI, requiring both deep technical delivery and the executive presence to manage long cycles and complex stakeholder alignment.

Key Responsibilities

Build end-to-end proofs of concept and minimum viable products inside customer codebases, infrastructure, and constraints.
Architect inference foundations for GenAI-driven products, sizing deployments to scale reliably in the market without infrastructure bottlenecks.
Execute load tests, establish latency, throughput, and cost baselines against realistic traffic, and tune deployments accordingly.
Deploy and validate new model families across inference frameworks, determining optimal quantization configs and serving patterns.
Guide clients on model selection, fine-tuning strategies including SFT, DPO, and RFT, and evaluation methodologies.
Build and execute fine-tuning pipelines directly with clients while managing trade-offs between compute costs, quality targets, and model families.
Lead structured discovery conversations to unpack pain points, define success criteria, and own technical relationships from engagement to production.
Spend time on-site with customers to build trust, momentum, and face-to-face working relationships.
Translate recurring customer pain points and deployment patterns into concrete product proposals and roadmap feedback.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of hands-on, customer-facing technical experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, Solutions Architect, field-exposed ML Engineer, or technical founder.
Demonstrated ability to build production software with clients and ship code running in external production environments.
Strong programming skills in Python, with the ability to read, write, and debug production code.
Working knowledge of the LLM stack, covering inference trade-offs, model serving, and fine-tuning workflows.
Experience with cloud infrastructure providers such as AWS, Azure, and GCP, alongside deploying models on GPU infrastructure.
Familiarity with Kubernetes and infrastructure engineering principles.
Exceptional communication abilities spanning technical debugging with machine learning engineers and strategic presentations to vice presidents.

Nice to Have

10 or more years of experience in technical field or engineering roles.
Direct experience utilizing inference serving frameworks like vLLM, SGLang, or TensorRT-LLM to tune deployments for real workloads.
Proven track record of operating as a technical authority within client environments and taking generative AI proofs of concept to production scale.
Experience working with hyperscaler AI platforms including Azure AI Foundry, AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, or GCP Vertex.
Background in building or integrating agentic systems, tool-use chains, or AI-native developer toolchains.

Skills and Tools

Python
PyTorch
AWS, GCP, Azure
